북한은 ‘우리식 사회주의체제’ 속에 존재하는 집단으로, 상징을 통한 정치화가 상당하다. 북한은 김일성의 권력 정당성을 강화하기 위해 ‘항일혁명전통’을 정확히 인식하고자 목적하는 상징정치를 생산하였고, 후계자들 ― 김정일, 김정은 ― 의 등장으로 인한 정치적 변화에 따라 그들만의상징정치를 재생산해오고 있다. 특히, 3대 세습자 김정은은 활발한 현지지도를 통해 상징적 이미지를 구축하고 이를 정치에 적극 활용하고 있다. 김정은의 현지지도는 광범위한 지역을 포괄하며 다양한 인물들과 접촉한것이 특징이다. 젊은 지도자의 이미지를 활용하여 적극적인 현지지도 행보를 이어가는 것이다. 또한 자신이 중점적으로 추진하는 정책과 관련된곳을 여러 차례 방문하는 경향도 보인다. 김정은의 현지지도를 통해 나타난 상징성은 크게 네 가지로 분석된다. 첫째, 권력 정통성 확보를 위한상징정치, 둘째, 관광정책과 선전전을 통한 상징정치, 셋째 과학기술우선정책 추진의 상징정치, 넷째, 애민적 지도자 이미지 형성을 통한 상징정치이다. 폐쇄적인 북한을 예측하기 위해 북한이 연이어 공개하는 최고지도자의 현지지도 속의 숨은 상징성 분석이 중요하다.
Politicization of symbolism is prevalent in North Korea, practising the self-dubbed ‘socialism in our own style’ In an effort to consolidate his power legitimacy, North Korea’s Kim Il Sung has developed symbolic politics to define his revolutionary tradition, and his successors ― Kim Jung Il and Kim Jong Un ― have reproduced their own symbolic politics according to their respective political changes. Young leader Kim Jong Un is keen on establishing his image through active onthe- spot-guidance which he enthusiastically utilizes for his own politics. Kim Jong Un’s on-the-spot-guidance is particularly distinctive in its wider coverage of geographical area where he makes contact with diverse individuals. He is making full use of his image of young leader to actively bestow on-the-spot-guidances upon his subjects. Also, he is seen frequently visiting places particularly related to his personally 224 현대북한연구 2015 · 18권 3호driven policies. The symbolism as shown through Kim Jong Un’s on-the-spotguidance can be summarized as follows. First, symbolic politics focused on securing his power legitimacy; second, symbolic politics in tourism policies and propaganda; third, symbolic politics prioritized on science and technology; and fourth, symbolic politics through building a people-caring leadership image of Kim Jong Un. In order to make any estimation of North Korea, it is important to analyze the symbolism hidden in its supreme leader’s on-the-spot-guidance, which the state publicizes tirelessly through its media.
