본고에서는 20세기 초에 왕성한 출판 활동을 벌인 지송욱과 그가 경영한 신구서림을 살펴보았다. 지송욱은 갑오개혁 전후에 황필수와 박태윤의 도움을 받아 출판계에 입문하였는데 황필수는 선배 출판인으로서 서적 출판의 실제적인 문제에 대해 도움을 주었고, 박태윤은 재정적인 면에서 도움을 준 것으로 보인다. 한편 지송욱이 출판업에 종사하게 된 것은 당시 종이를 무역하던 박태윤의 이익 창출과 관련이 있었다. 한편 지송욱은 처음에는 아무런 商號 없이 방각본 출판을 주로 하다가 1907년 경부터 신구서림이라는 상호를 사용하였으며, 1910년대 중반에는 방각본을 비롯하여 활자본 고전소설과 신소설을 아주 많이 간행하여 당시 출판계에서 주도적인 역할을 하게 되었다. 그리고 지송욱은 인쇄업에도 관심을 가졌지만 1920년대 말에는 출판업에서 손을 뗀 것으로 보인다. 한편 그가 경제적 이익을 얻기 위해 출판업을 했다고 해도 그가 당대 新文化 운동에 기여한 것은 인정해야 할 것이다.

In this paper, I researched Chi, Song-uk who had published many books energetically and Singu-Sŏrim which was operated by him in the first half of the twentieth century. On the occasion of Kabo kyŏngjang(甲午更張), Chi, Song-uk went into the publishing world with the help of Hwang, P’il-su(황필수) and P’ak, T’ae-yun(박태윤). Hwang, P’il-su assisted in the practicalities of the publishing the book as a senior in this field. And P’ak, T’ae-yun seemed to support Chi financially. Meanwhile, Chi‘s chance of entering this business was related to P’ak, T’ae-yun' who was engaged in trade of papers. In the beginning, Chi, Song-uk mostly published by block print edition(방각본) without the firm name. From 1907, he started to use the firm name, Singu-Sŏrim. In the middle of the 1910's, he published classical stories(고전소설) and a new style fictions(신소설) by block print and a lead type in large numbers. Therefore, he played an important part in the publishing circles and interested in the printing business. However, he looked like getting publishing business off his hands in the latter half of the 1920's. Anyway, we should admire his contribution to the Movement for the New Cultural(신문화운동) even though he ran his publishing company for his profit.
