이 논문은 대하소설 <화산선계록>에 등장하는 여성주동인물의 영웅적 성격을 분석함으로써 대하소설에도 다양한 층위가 있다는 점을 밝히고, 독특한 형태의 여성영웅소설이 존재한다는 점을 드러내는 데 목적이 있다. 여성주동인물 이옥수는 <화산선계록>에서 등장인물과 서술자의 요약적 진술을 통해 영웅적 능력의 소유자임이 드러나 있고, 실제 행위에서도 선천적 지혜와 후천적 능력 습득의 결과 상대를 자유자재로 유린하는 모습이 확인된다. 이옥수는 기존에 제시된, 전쟁의 막후에서 지원하거나 전쟁터에서 활약하는 여성영웅의 모습과는 차원이 다른 여성영웅이다. 이옥수는 월등한 서사 정보를 바탕으로 서사를 지배하면서 남성주동인물보다 훨씬 큰 능력을 발휘하고 있다. 그녀는 대리인이나 이중 첩자를 내세워 상대를 속임으로써 갈등을 막후에서 해결한다는 특징을 보이고 있으며 그렇게 함으로써 위씨 집안을 튼튼히 지키는 역할을 한다. 이러한 이옥수의 영웅적 이야기는 주로 <삼국지연의>에서 쓰인 以夷制夷의 수법과 고육책의 수법 등을 차용하였다. 이옥수를 통해 <화산선계록>을 이해할 때, <화산선계록>은 대하소설의 자장 내에 있으면서도 대하소설을 벗어나려 하는, 여성영웅소설의 성격이 매우 짙은 소설이다. 서술자는 <삼국지연의>에 익숙한 여성 독자에게 그 작품에서 쓰인 기법을 <화산선계록>에 적용함으로써 독자에게 흥미를 선사하고 남성보다 월등한 여성의 활약을 보여줌으로써 여성 독자를 위로한다. 다른 인물을 통해 유교 이념을 드러내면서도 이옥수를 통해서는 흥미를 배가시키고 발랄한 모습을 드러냄으로써 대하소설의 전형과는 거리가 있도록 하였다. <화산선계록>은 장편이고 사대부 층에서 향유되었으며 <삼국지연의>의 영향을 받아 창작된 소설이라는 점에서 단편 여성영웅소설인 <박씨전>류와는 다르고, 男裝과 전쟁 화소가 없으면서도 영웅적 능력이 발현되어 있다는 점에서 장편 여성영웅소설인 <하진양문록>과도 다르다. <화산선계록>의 작가는 여성 현실과는 맞지 않은 남장과 전쟁 화소 대신 여성 현실을 고려하면서도 여성에게 영웅적 능력을 부여하였는데, 이는 다른 여성영웅소설이 이룩하지 못한 <화산선계록>만의 독창적 지취라 하겠다.

A Study on a Heroic Female Character of Long Novels -Focusing on Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록)- Jang, Si-gwang This thesis is designed to show that there are many levels of long novels and that a unique form of a female heroic novel exist by analyzing a heroic character of a heroine appearing in a long novel, Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록). Having a very heroic character, Lee, Ok-su, a heroine of Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록), pulls the wires and deals with problems. She cheats others as free as she wants and settles conflict. That is hardly seen in a long novel. Female readers have fun through the acts of Lee, Ok-su and feel excited in the scene of her overwhelming male characters. Seen centering around Lee, Ok-su, Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록) is similar to The Quest of Three Kingdoms(삼국지연의) in many ways while, in this way, it is different from a short female heroic novel, Parkssijeon(박씨전). Also, it is different from a long female heroic novel, Hajinyangmunrok(하진양문록), in that it shows a heroic ability without including a motif of male attire and war. Instead of including a motif of male attire and war, the author of Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록) endowed a woman with a heroic ability, considering the realities of a woman. This is a unique part of Hwasanseongyerok(화산선계록) that is not seen in other female heroic novels.
