100년이 넘은 한국고소설 영역의 역사는 3기로 나뉘어질 수 있다. 1기에는 주로 선교사들을 중심으로 한 해외출판이 이루어졌고, 2기에는 한국인들에 의한 국내출판이 주를 이루었다. 3기는 외국의 한국문학자들에 의한 외국출판이 대부분이다. 최근 한국문학의 영역작품수는 늘고 있지만, 주로 현대문학작품들이며 고소설의 경우에는 현재 침체기에 있다.논자는 한국고소설 영역본들을 원전과 비교하는 작업을 통해, 우리 고소설 영역작업에 관심을 가지는 계기를 마련하고, 앞으로의 영역작업에 도움이 되고자 한다. 먼저 하나의 예로 박지원의 <허생전>을 살펴보았다. <허생전>은 독서물로서나 학문적 연구의 대상으로서 영어문화권에서도 주목받고 있는 작품인데, 영역본으로는 문희경, Peter Lee, David McCann이 영역한 세 가지가 있다.먼저 여러 가지 오역들이 눈에 띤다. <허생전>은 한문소설로 한자의 정확한 해석이 필요하지만, 영역자들의 漢文 誤讀이 英文 誤譯으로 이어지는 부분들이 있었다. 또, 한국 고유문화에 대한 이해부족과 문맥을 잘못 이해한데서 온 오역들도 보였다. 그리고, 우리 고유의 용어를 옮기는 것도 어려운 일인데, 이는 사학자, 철학자 등과의 협의를 통해 통일을 해나가야 할 것으로, 'the civil service examination[kwag ]'와 같은 표기법으로 통일되는 것이 바람직할 것이다. 이와 함께 작품, 출판사, 역자의 선정문제 등과 같은 영역의 실제문제에 대해서도 고민해 보았다. 한국 문학의 세계화를 위해 한국고소설 영역작업은 활발하게 진행되어야 할 것이다.
There is a history of more than one hundred years of the translation of classical Korean novels into English versions. We can divide this history into three periods. In the 1st period (1889-1950), some translations were made by missionaries published outside of Korea. In the 2nd period (1950-1979), Koreans translated novels and published them in Korea. In the 3rd period (1980-present), foreigners who study Korean literature have published outside of Korea. Even though the English versions are increasing, most of them are about modern Korean novels. In this paper, through the comparison of the English versions with the original texts, I promote peoples’ interest in the English versions of classical Korean novels and help develop the future work of translating. First of all, as an example I have studied “The Story of Master Hŏ” written by Pak, Chi-won(1737-1805). It is a classical Korean novel written in Chinese. “The Story of Master Hŏ” has three different English versions. Moon, Lee and McCann are the translators of these three different versions. Even though there are numerous translations, those versions have several common problems. “The Story of Master Hŏ” is a classical Korean novel that was originally written in Chinese. Therefore, we must translate each Chinese word into English. There definitely needs to be a great deal more care and attention when trying to translate. And, translators have to translate proper nouns, historical and philosophical vocabularies carefully, because those are imbued with profound meaning. In order to do this correctly they would need to consult with experts in History or Philosophy to correctly explain the terms. And also, I have researched the practical problems like choosing the text, the translator, and the publishing company. The translating work should move forward enthusiastically for the globalization of Korean literature.
