This essay considers the history of <ChoonHyangJeon(春香傳)> that was reassigned with translation focusing on Gale's English version(1917~1918) of <OkJoongHwa(獄中花)>. Takahashi(高橋亨)'s translation(1910) of <ChoonHyangJeon> was arranged with proverbs and fables. In his work, the language of <ChoonHyangJeon> was not exactly the literary language but the words which are close to spoken language including fables and proverbs collected by Takahashi which provide customs and practices of Koreans. On the ground that the languages were based on spoken words, the language of <ChoonHyangJeon> had not needed to be translated word for word, and the original content had not needed to be settled either. However, owing to the appearance of Gale's <OkJoongHwa>, a new prospect of the field of <ChoonHyangJeon>'s translation was opened. Gale's English version of <OkJoongHwa> proved the fact that <ChoonHyanJeon> was not only the piece which should exist in book form but also the work which had been changed as the 'closed text' that should be translated literally. Nevertheless, the change was not made with all of sudden because the context of philological works by Japanese private organizations and government general was placed between Takahashi's work and Gale's translation. Besides, the understanding of the geopolitic-historical difference between western(Japan) and Korea as the one between premodern and modern Korea also affected the context; therefore, modern language and modern literature of Korea has been formed under this circumstance.
