본고의 목적은 한국 고전소설 가운데 동물이 주인공으로 등장하는 작품을 대상으로 주인공의 의미와 특징을 분석하고 그들이 지니는 작품 속의 위상을 고찰하는 것이다. 또한 이를 바탕으로 작품에 대한 새로운 해석의 단초를 확인하고자 한다. 이를 위해 <金現感虎>. <虎叱>, <서동지전> 등을 대상으로 작품 속에 등장하는 동물 주인공을 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 첫째, <金現感虎>에 등장하는 동물 주인공 ‘虎女’는 인간으로 하여금 반성적 사유를 통한 인식의 전환을 가져오게 하는 철학적 동물로서의 위상을 지녔다. 둘째, <虎叱>에 등장하는 호랑이는 거시적 안목으로 변화하는 국제 정세를 냉정하게 파악하여 민족의 미래를 발전적으로 도모해야함을 주장하는 정치적 동물로서의 위상을 지녔다. 셋째, <서동지전>에 등장하는 동물 주인공 쥐는 일정한 사회적 지위를 확보함으로써 약자를 포용할 수 있는 당대의 시대상에 적합한 사회적 동물로서의 위상을 갖추었다. 인간에게 있어 동물은 어떠한 존재인가, 라는 것은 결국 인간이 질문하고 답해야 할 영역이다. 그들이 더 이상 수단이나 도구의 영역에 머물지 않고 의미의 영역에 위치하도록 하는 것 역시 인간의 몫이다. 그러기 위해서는 동물 그 자체에 대해 혹은 그들의 삶에 대해 진지하게 고민하고 사유함으로써 그들에게서 일종의 문화적 대상으로서의 가치를 발견하고 나아가 그것을 유의미한 방향으로 해석하는 것이 중요하다. 문학 역시 이러한 부분에 일정하게 기여할 필요가 있을 것이다. 본고는 이러한 관점에서 고전소설 속 동물 주인공들의 의미와 위상을 점검하고자 하였다.
