<용궁부연록>에는 주인공 한생이 용왕의 초청을 받아 절대 갈수 없는 곳이라 여겼던 용궁에 다녀오는 것으로 그려진다. 이는 이 작품이 주인공 한생의 용왕 및 용궁 세계와의 소통 문제를 다룬 작품으로서, 용궁(龍宮)이라는 우의적(寓意的) 공간에 대한 주인공 한생의 경계 허물기를 형상화한 작품임을 뜻한다. 이러한 한생의 경계 허물기는 용궁 방문 과정에 이루어지는 가회각 상량문의 작성과 윤필연 참여라는 두 단계의 환상 체험을 통해 이루어진다. 첫 번째 단계에서는 한생이 자신이 지은 가회각 상량문에서 제시한 용왕의 딸과 용궁 밖의 군자의 혼인 형식을 빈 용궁의 안과 밖의 변증법적 화합 형식이 기실 자신의 무의식적 소망의 투사이며, 용궁 안과 밖의 경계가 기실 용궁에 대한 자신의 태도에 의해 설정된 것이라는 사실을 깨닫는다. 그리고, 두 번째 단계에서는 한생이 윤필연에 참여하여 잔치에 참여한 용왕과 용궁의 악대, 용왕의 신료, 그리고 용궁 밖의 존재들의 노래를 들은 뒤, 그들이 용궁 안과 용궁 밖이라는 이분법적 범주로 나누어질 수 있는 존재가 아니라는 걸 깨닫는다. 한생은 이러한 두 단계의 각성 과정을 통해 용궁 안과 밖의 경계가 용왕에 대한 자신의 인식에서 비롯된 것임을 깨닫고, 용왕의 신성을 인정하면서 용왕을 예찬하는 시를 짓는다.
In Yonggung-Booyun-rok<용궁부연록> the hero Han-saeng(한생) visited the underwater palace, Yonggung(용궁), where he had thought as he could have not been. It means that this novel works on the communication between the hero Han-saeng(한생) and Yonggung(용궁), symbolizing his experience of blurring the line between Yonggung(용궁) and the real world. This could be reached by two steps of his illusionary experiences of the celebration writings of Kahoegak(가회각) and the participation of Yunpil-festival(潤筆宴). In the first step, the hero Han-saeng(한생) comprehended that the dialectical unity between Yonggung(용궁) and the real world which was symbolized as the marriage between the daughter of Yongwang(용왕) and the gentleman of the real world was a projection of his unconscious wish, and that the border between Yonggung(용궁) and the real world had made in his attitude toward Yonggoong(용궁). In the second step, listening the songs of Yunpil-festival(潤筆宴), the hero Han-saeng(한생) realized that Yongwang(용왕), the band of Yonggung(용궁), retainers of Yongwang(용왕), and the beings outside Yonggung(용궁) could not be devided into two classifications of Yonggung(용궁) and the real world. Through this two steps of realization, the hero Han-saeng(한생) perceived that the border between Yonggung and the real world had been originated from his own view of Yongwang(용왕), and finally composed a poem which included an admiration for Yongwang(용왕) as a holy being.
