The purpose of this study was to analyze the self-consciousness aspect of characters in a tragic situation that this novel is suggesting, centering on Hwang Sun-won’s 「Trees Stand on the Slope」 among novels in the 1950s , which is called as the post-war literature in our modern literature history. In other words, it analyzed the tragic reality confronted by young people who suffered war at that time, the characters’ psychology of coping with it, the conscious status, and the relationship with other person, and explored trauma that they come to suffer, a life method of being oriented, and further a problem of man’s relief. ’Dong-ho’ and ‘Hyeon-tae,’ who are the central characters in this novel, fail to have a will to positively overcome the given situation and come to bring ruin in the wake of being consistent just with avoiding without an effort to confront squarely even with a sense of guilt in the internal oneself. On the contrary to this, ‘Suk’ has a will to endure to the end without avoiding the situation that she confronted, thereby showing possibility of being able to get over own tragedy unlike Dong-ho and Hyeon-tae. Ultimately, this work is grasped to be suggesting one direction and possibility of man’s relief through a will to overcome in the devastated reality after the war.
