This paper is to analyze phonological variation of /t/ deletion in English within the framework of the Rank-Ordering Model of . Phonological variation has been problematic in classic Optimality Theory since more than one output can be well-formed and be counted as grammatical. In the Rank-Ordering Model of Eval as a new approach, Eval imposes order on the full candidate set and the constraints are divided into two groups by the critical cut-off. By using the concept of critical cut-off and rank ordering, this model presents an analysis of phonological variation in /t/ deletion without significantly different outputs or various subhierarchies. It is also argued that Rank-Ordering Model of Eval can be a new alternative to the explanation of phonological variation.
