翻訳(通訳)をする上で、起点言語と目標言語の間の言語的·文化的距離がもっとも近い場合は大きな問題に 直面する可能性は低いと考えられるが、実際には二つの言語が密接な関係にある場合、表面的な類似性に惑 わされ誤った翻訳(通訳)が出来上がることが多々ある(Nida)。言語的·文化的な類似性が高い韓国語と日本語 の場合においても、言語形式とその機能が一致しないため多くの誤解が生じていることが見過ごされがちで ある。その代表的な例が「~하지 않으면 안 된다/어야 한다(~しなければならない/べきだ)」という言語形式で ある。日本語ではこの形式が義務や指示、規定を表す機能があるのに対し、韓国語では義務や指示、規定のほ か、依頼や勧誘などの場面にもよく用いられる。そのため、韓国語母語話者の依頼は、ときには聞き手の日本 語母語話者に押し付けがましい印象を与え、誤解を招きやすい。そして、このような問題は国際会議の場を はじめとする公の場においても、しばしば見られる。円滑なコミュニケーションを妨げたり、表面には現れ ない深刻な誤解や葛藤が生じることがある。そこで、公の場においてこの言語形式によってどのような問題 が発生しているかを調べ、それをもとに言語行動や言語における距離の違いなどについて考察する。これに より、異文化コミュニケーションを担う通訳者が、類似性に惑わされて誤解を生じさせないように注意を喚 起したい。
At an inter-cultural setting of communication, it is very difficult to grasp the nuances in detail contained in the message of the speakers. For this reason, the interpreter sitting between the speaker and listener must involve in one way or another to ensure that the full message is delivered correctly. The longer the cultural distance between the speaker and listener, the bigger the necessity for active mediation by the interpreter (Nida). It is usually assumed that the interpreter’s role in the communication between Korean and Japanese is less significant than that in other language combinations thanks to the cultural and linguistic similarity between the two nations. However, often neglected is the fact that this language pair is also exposed to the danger of misunderstanding because of the differences in speech forms and functions.A case in point are the forms 「~sinakerebanaranai/beki」. In Japanese, these expressions are limited to instructions or orders, while they include in Korean requests or recommendations in addition to instructions. Therefore, word-by-word translation of Korean expressions of this kind into Japanese may be perceived by listeners having Japanese as the mother language to be pushy or impolite. This paper looks into how these forms are used in the daily life and, based on the results, examines the differences of distance and linguistic behavior between the two cultures at official settings.
