본고에서는 진도아리랑의 민속문학적 자질과 특징을 구술문화의 산물, 삶의 문학, 통속성과 근대성의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 진도아리랑은 구술문화의 산물이다. 진도아리랑의 기원에 대해 다양한 담론들이 존재하는데 이는 기록문학과는 달리 확정할 수 있는 기원이 없다는 뜻이다. 진도아리랑은 기억하기 쉽고 부르기 쉬운 구조로 이루어져 있다. 구술문화에서는 생각해서 말로 표현한 사고를 기억해 두고 그것을 재현하는 것을 효과적으로 하기 위해서 쉬운 구조를 필요로 한다. 진도아리랑은 혼자서 부르는 것보다 여럿이 같이 불러야 더욱 흥이 나는 공동체의 문학이다. 문학의 창작자와 향유자가 따로 정해져 있는 것이 아니라 창작자와 향유자가 공유되는 민속문학의 성격을 띠는 것이다. 진도아리랑은 삶의 문학으로서 사설에는 애정사, 가정사, 사회상, 자연, 인생 등에 관한 삶의 다양한 문제들이 녹아 있다. 진도아리랑에는 젊은 날의 추억이 각인되어 있고 한의 정서를 흥의 정서로 바꾸는 치유의 힘이 있다. 진도아리랑은 민중들의 삶과 함께 했던 삶의 기억이자 삶의 표현이다. 진도 아리랑이 다른 지역의 아리랑과 구별되는 속성은 통속성을 전면에 내세우고 있다는 점이다. 진도아리랑은 해학적인 사설, 남녀의 성을 노래한 사설, 이별의 슬픔을 노래한 사설의 비중이 전체 노래의 60% 이상을 차지한다. 진도아리랑 사설은 다른 지역 아리랑에 비해 전통사회의 가치관과 충돌하는 내용들이 많다는 점에서 차별화된다. 사랑을 표현하는데 있어서 대담한 여성들, 전통적 가부장제의 권위를 웃음거리로 만들어버리는 며느리들의 모습이 진도아리랑 사설 속에서 찾아진다. 진도아리랑의 사설은 민감한 시대감각을 반영하지만 한편으로는 식민지 근대화에 대한 동경을 보여주는 사설들도 존재한다. 일본은 한국인들에게 일본의 세계관, 문화적 규범, 가치들을 강요함으로써 의식을 식민화하고자 하였다는 점에서 성찰이 필요한 부분이다. 진도아리랑은 지금도 활발하게 전승되고 연행되는 민속문학이다. 앞으로도 수없이 많은 가사들이 새롭게 창작될 것이다. 이때 구비시가의 속성과 삶의 문학으로서의 특성, 시대성을 담아내는 진도아리랑의 정체성을 지켜나가야 할 것이다.

The study investigated Jindo Arirang as folk literature in the aspects of product of verbal culture and literature of life. Various discourses exist about an origin of Jindo Arirang. This means that there is no origin decided. It is one of features of folk culture when and from whom folk literature started have not been exactly known. Jindo Arirang consists of a structure which is easy to remember and sing. For verbal culture, easy structure to effectively reproduce is essential to remember thoughts expressed in words. Jindo Arirang is literature of a community. Jindo Arirang is a song producing fun when sung in group. Creator and singer are not decided separately. Creator is singer, at the same time, singer is creator. This is a character of folk literature. Jindo Arirang as literature of life and its narration includes various problems of life about affairs of affection, family affairs, social appearances, the nature, life etc. Jindo Arirang includes recollection of young days and this has a healing power to change sentiment of regret to sentiment of fun. Jindo Arirang is a memory of life and expression of life-the song had been together with general public. Jindo Arirang is distinguished from Arirang in other regions in that Jindo Arirang emphasizes popular vein. Jindo Arirang includes humorous narration, narration to sing man and woman’s sex, narration to sing grief of separation. The portion of such narrations accounts for over 60% out of total. Narration of Jindo Arirang is differentiated in that there are many contents to conflict with values of traditional society compared to Arirang in the other areas. In the narration of Jindo Arirang, there are bold women in expressing love, daughter-in-law who makes authority of traditional patriarchy be laugh. Narration of Jindo Arirang reflects sensitive era sense but, on the other hand, narrations to show modernity of colony exist. Jindo Arirang is a folk literature that is being actively transmitted and performed even today. Even in the future, a number of words of a song would be newly created. Then, attributes of folklore poems and characteristics as literature of life should be kept.
