About the Establishment of Sin-mun-gwan

신문관은 1908년 6월 최남선이 창립한 근대적인 출판사다. 신문관의 관리와 경영은 출판 사업과 분리되었으며 편집과 인쇄, 판매 부문이 독립적으로 운영되었다. 또한 청년 학우회와 조선 광문회는 최남선과 신문관을 구심점으로 삼아 적극적인 문화 계몽 활동을 펼쳤다. 그런데 신문관의 창립 경위와 실상은 정확하게 알려져 있지 않다. 이 연구는 신문관이 창립된 시기와 사옥의 위치를 실증적으로 추적하는 일에 초점을 두었다. 또 신문관의 창립 과정과 운영에 간여한 협력자와 주변 인물을 조사하고, 신문관의 기반 및 출판 활동을 둘러싼 역사적 조건을 검토했다. 이로써 회고와 증언에 의존하면서 빚어진 잘못을 바로잡았으며, 신문관이 담당한 역할과 성과를 객관적으로 파악하기 위한 발판을 마련했다.

Sin-mun-gwan was established in June 1908 by Choe Nam-seon. The modern publishing company, which had the editorial, printing and sales department, separated publication from management. Moreover Cheong-nyeon Hak-u-hoe and Jo-seon Gwang-mun-hoe were closely connected with it. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate when, where and how Sin-mun-gwan was established. Through closely examining the historical material, serious errors committed by memoirs, critical biographies or studies are re-examined and corrected. Some of the errors that are explored are: Choe Nam-seon’s collaborator or coworker, the year of establishment and the exact site of Sin-mun-gwan, and so forth. This takes a first step in a the study on the historical conditions of publications from Sin-mun-gwan.
