1900~1910년대 ‘계몽․통속물의 시대’부터 1920년대 ‘교양물의 시대’에 이르는 번역의 흐름을 주도한 것은 다름 아닌 ‘신문’이었다. 이 중 1920~30년대 『조선일보』에 실린 번역문학은 그 위상에 비해 연구가 미미했다. 이에 본고는 『조선일보』의 문학사적 좌표 찾기의 일환으로 시작되었다. 『조선일보』는 조선의 신문학 건설을 위해 다양한 문학작품들을 게재했고, 해외문학에 대해서도 꾸준한 관심을 보였다. 다양한 나라와 장르의 문학작품들을 소개․번역하여 독자들의 지적․정서적 자질을 함양토록 했고, 동시에 ‘교양의 육성’까지 도모했다. 특히 『조선일보』는 번역 아동물에 관심이 높았는데, 이는 아동물 장르의 특성상 접근이 용이하고 독자층도 넓어서 그 파급 효과가 크기 때문이다. 따라서 『조선일보』는 이상적인 인간상을 제시한 교훈적인 이야기들을 아동물을 통해 대거 전달했다. 이와 더불어 ‘명작 아동물 기획기사’를 통해 독자들에게 보편적이고 전체적인 지식을 획득케 했고, 인격 양성을 통한 교양 육성에 힘썼다. 『조선일보』의 이러한 매체적 노력과 필자 개개인의 노력에 의해 『조선일보』를 구독․낭독하는 독자들은 ‘독서’라는 문화적 실천 행위를 통해 자연스럽게 교양을 체득할 수 있었다. 이처럼 1920~30년대 『조선일보』는 시대적 조류를 활발하게 반영하고 있었고, 당대의 문인들과 문학적 이념들이 결집되어 있는 문학장으로 그 문학사적 가치가 있다.
Newspapers lead the flow of translation from ‘Age of enlightened pop fiction’ in 1900-1910 to ‘the age of books for cultured reading’ in 1920. Out of the translations of these periods, the amount of research on literature translated by Chosun Ilbo in 1920-1930 is insignificant, compared to the status of literature translated. This article therefore started one of the findings guidelines the history of Korean literature. Chosun Ilbo published a variety of literary work for establishment of modern literature in Chosun, and gave steady attention to Foreign Literature. Chosun Ilbo introduced and translated literary works from different nations and genres, and in building up the intellectual and emotional talent in its readers, it also encouraged readers to take on the ‘promotion of culture’. Chosun Ilbo had an especially keen interest in translated Children’s Literature. Because, Children’s Literature has naturally having an easily accessible and a wide class of readers, it could have a powerful effect. Thus, Chosun Ilbo transmitted educational stories that proposed a desirable human characteristics. In addition, through feature articles on the masterpieces of children’s literature, it made readers aware of general knowledge at large, and it made an effort to promote refinement through character- building. Thanks to the efforts of Chosun Ilbo as mass media and an individual, readers of subscribing and reading Chosun Ilbo could learn refinement by practicing the cultural activity that we call ‘Reading’. In this way Chosun Ilbo reflected the spirit of the age in 1920-1930, and it is important in the history of literature by accumulating writers and literary ideas of the age.
