Humour is a universal trait and is the next most socially acceptableform of communication in our society. In other words humour is anall-pervasive feature of everyday language and is a key component inhuman interactions. As a natural consequence, the employment of humourwithin the context of Language Teaching, has to be taken into properconsideration. The purpose of the present study is to analyse humour inthis perspective. The last studies in applied linguistics has shown howhumorous moments can contribute to foreign language learning byexpanding learners’ communicative repertoires, by drawing learners’attention to FL forms and by destabilizing students’ interlanguage. Otherstudies have recognized its important affective function and its role inreducing anxiety, strengthening in-group affiliation and mitigating facethreatening. After the investigation of positive and negative effects ofhumor, the focus of the present study shifts towards humours languageplay. The purpose is to give some practical advice for creating languagegames able to enhance playful talk among students. In terms of contextthe research takes into specific consideration Korean university studentsstudying Italian as FL.
