This paper studied why Zhang Ailing and Shi Zhecun were fascinated with traditional narrative Chuanqi, who made an experiment on writing of far out and avant garde. they understood modern times as oxymoron to above interpretation, thought that it could be understood with only Chuanqi method. Shanghai in those day, was the gateway to China civilization and the concession with duplicity of colony and metropolis, and the symbolic space that condensed the complexity of modern civilization as hybridity of culture, nation, gender. this space is beyond dualism of tradition and modern, Zhang Ailing and Shi Zhecun found out Chuanqi as the way to overcome this dualism. Accordingly, they gave a challenge to the attempt that separated the present from the past, and separated modernity from tradition. The present and the past lied one upon another in their text. After all, Chuanqi was a point of view for them to read and criticize modernity.
