During the anti-Japanese national liberation war, Shen Cong Wen taught at National Southwest Associated University (NSAU). Influenced by modern western thoughts, the intellectuals of NSAU cried out for freedom and democracy, and became the ideal role models of the Chinese society. They demonstrated an ideal life of intellectuals by devoting themselves to education and individual studies as well as actively participating in politics in the midst of the war. The professors and students of NSAU openly communicated with each other on topics beyond their specific majors. However, the intellectual community in NSAU disregarded Shen Cong Wen. He was an author who had been denied of opportunities for college entrance and found his identity in the primitive folk of his homeland, Xiang Xi province. This study considered the exclusion of the intellectual community in NSAU toward Shen as that of the enlightenment reason toward the primitive folk. The reading method of T. W. Adorno and M. Horkheimer about Odysseus was used to explain the approach mentioned previously. 'Expression of the Abstract' was the new literary choice of Shen in the 1940s. Shen’s purpose of choosing 'Expression of the Abstract' was to resist the enlightenment reason and overstep the limit of his past writing. Unfortunately, Shen’s effort to close the gap between the ideal world and reality ended in vain. However, his various trials in literature brought new possibilities to Chinese modern literature.
