Eco-feminism in Miyazaki Hayao's Film Eunkyung Jin (Korea Univ.) Miyazaki Hayao, one of the leading directors of Japanese animation society, presents in his works themes such as modernity, pollution, destruction of nature, and sense of life, which directly face critical problems in modern society. In his films, Future Boy Conan(1978), Nausica of the Valley of the Wind(1984), LAPUTA: Castle in the Sky(1986), My Neighbor Totoro(1988), Princess Mononoke(1997), Spirited Away(2001), Howl's Moving Castle(2004), he deals with an ecological theme of coexistence of human beings and nature. Especially, his works shows nature in the woods, blue sky, and trees full of life. And nature is devastated by technological civilization. Nature, nevertheless, is rehabilitated and assimilated by feministic characters who take steps forward. Nature and feminism, which are injured beings, should be rehabilitated and healed together for the harmonies of the world. Women are active producers of life who play the role to conceive a life and bring it up. Men passively take part in producing lives. Therefore feministic principles, feminism are considered to be the principles of life. Miyazaki Hayao's films are closely related to eco-feminism because they focus on inquiries of feminism and motherhood. This study investigates Miyazaki Hayao's animation from the eco-feministic views. On the first step, his idea of nature is fully explained. And then relationships between feministic characters and nature are analyzed. Analysis focuses mainly on Nausica of the Valley of the Wind(1984), LAPUTA: Castle in the Sky(1986), My Neighbor Totoro(1988), My Neighbor Totoro(1988), which cherish 'tree' and 'wood'.
