현재 고고학적으로 확인된 확실한 燕長城은 內蒙古의 庫倫旗와 遼寧省 阜新縣까지이다. 그러나 史記와 括地志 등에 燕長城이 遼河를 건너 遼東郡의 치소인 襄平縣(지금의 遼陽市)까지이르렀다고 기록되어 있고, 遼陽市 뿐만 아니라 東北大平原과 千山山地가 교계하는 沈陽 등遼東 북부 지역에서의 燕나라 城址, 聚落址, 기와류, 古墳群의 분포를 고려할 때, 鐵嶺 邱臺취락지의 북쪽 柴河 하류역～淸河 하류역을 중심으로 遼河 양안에 걸쳐 遼西 등지와는 달리취약한 구조의 일단의 燕長城이 있었을 것으로 판단된다. 거의 모든 燕長城 연구자들이 그것이 線狀이든, 아니면 亭鄣과 烽燧臺가 點列되어 있는 것이든 간에 燕長城의 경유지로 주장하고 있는 遼東 東部 산간 지역은 燕나라의 성지, 취락지, 고분군이 결여되어 있는 상태에서 주로 토착 집단의 유적이 분포하고 있다는 점과 水經 등 문헌자료에 秦長城, 趙長城, 漢長城 등과는 달리 燕長城에 관해서만 전혀 언급이 없는 점을 고려할때 처음부터 燕長城이 존재하지 않았다고 생각된다.平安北道 지역 또한 이 지역에 설치되었다고 하는 燕나라의 ‘障塞’와 秦나라의 ‘遼東外徼’․‘上下障’이 전략적․군사적 요충지에 축조된 소형 城堡와 木柵 등이라는 점을 고려할 때 燕長城이 존재하지 않았다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 燕長城의 동쪽 종점은 襄平縣 관할 범위의 북쪽외곽에까지 이르렀다고 할 수 있고, 그 대략의 지점은 위의 지역 가운데 淸原․西豊․昌圖일대 토착 집단의 유적과 燕나라 유적 부존 여부가 모두 분명치 않은 柴河 하류역～淸河하류역의 東北大平原과 千山山地의 과도 지역이었던 것으로 생각된다.
At present, the archaeologically confirmed Yen great wall starts from Kulunqi in Neimenggu province to Fuxin prefecture in Liaodong province. However, the Shiji and Guadizhi states that the Yen great wall crosses the Liaohe river and reaches to Xiangping prefecture, the center of Liaodong commandery(present-day Liaoyang city), and considering that not only Liaoyang city but also the areas located where the great northeastern plain and the Tianshan mountain range converge on the northern areas of Liaodong such as Shenyang, Yen period castle ruins, settlement sites, tiles and tumuli are found, it is judged that a segment of the Yen great wall existed between the Tieling Qiutai settlement site and the castle ruins of Lishu Erlonghu. Almost all researchers of the Yen great wall agree that, whether the wall was a continuous line of fortifications or was dotted at intervals by fortifications and beacon fire sites, considering the state where in the eastern mountainous area of Liaodong where the Yen great wall is said to have passed, Yen castle sites, settlement sites and tumuli are absent and only remains of indigenous groups are distributed and that whereas the Shuijing and other documentary sources mention only the Qin, Zhao and Han great walls and do not mention the Yen great wall, it is thought that the Yen great wall originally did not exist in this area. Taking into account that the Yen ‘fortification’ and Qin ‘outer Liaodong fortification’ and ‘Shangxia fortification’ said to have been established in North Pyongan province also were not great walls but were miniature fortifications and wooden barricades located at strategic military locations, the Yen great wall does not seem to have existed in this area. Therefore the eastern terminus of the Yen great wall reached to the northern outer reaches of the jurisdiction of Xiangping prefecture and was located approximately in the area between the great northeastern plain and the Tianshan mountain range.
