본고는 백제초기 묘제환경의 정립을 위해 서울 석촌동 백제 고분군을 재검토한 것이다. 석촌동 고분군은 백제의 한성 도읍기 대표적 분묘군이다. 이 석촌동 고분군은 백제 왕실을 비롯한 중앙세력의 분묘군으로 인정하는 것이기도 하다. 석촌동 고분군은 적석총을 비롯한 토광묘, 석곽묘 등의 다양한 묘제가 알려져 있고, 그것이 백제 한성도읍기의 도읍지역 묘제환경으로 인정되기도 한다. 그런데 최근 백제고지에서 이루어진 다양한 고분군의 조사결과는 석촌동 고분군의 묘제환경의 이해에 나름의 문제도 제기된다. 특히 도읍지역에 그처럼 하나의 유적에 그처럼 다양한 묘제가 존재할 수 있는가, 백제묘제로서 적석총을 인정할 수 있는가, 나아가 보다 큰 문제는 석촌동 고분군과 다른 백제 고분군과의 상관관계를 전혀 찾을 수 없다는 점이 그것이다. 이는 석촌동 고분군의 재검토의 필요성이 제기되었고, 이에 석촌동 고분군의 집성된 자료를 토대로 조사과정은 물론 자료를 재분석하고 나아가 묘제로서의 정합성을 찾아보았다. 석촌동 고분군의 발굴조사는 비록 간헐적이지만 다양하게 이루어졌음에도 조사대상이 특정지역의 특정유구에 편중되었던 관계로 유적의 전체모습을 이해하는데 한계가 있음이 확인된다. 나아가 발굴조사된 자료의 묘제분류도 조사결과에 기초하는가 하면, 유구간 혹은 매장시설간의 분류에 일관성이 다소 결여되었음도 확인된다. 나아가 적석총의 경우 고고학적 증거, 즉 매장시설이나 유물, 비교자료 등의 묘제로서 입증할 자료가 전혀 존재하지 않음에도 고구려 적석총과 대비하여 적석총을 인지하는 한계도 나타난다. 오히려 석촌동 고분군은 자료현황에서 분묘로 인지되는 것과 그렇지 않은 것으로의 구분이 필요하면서 오히려 기왕에 적석총으로 분류된 유구가 공주 수촌리 백제고분군의 적석유구, 송산리 고분군의 방단 적석시설과 대비될 수 있다는 점은 충분히 주목하여야 할 것 같다. 수촌리나 송산리 고분군의 적석유구가 석촌동 고분군의 적석총과 흡사하면서도 오히려 매장시설이 아닌 상장례와 관련된 시설로 본다는 점에서 그러하다. 나아가 이외의 매장시설도 비록 발굴조사 후의 잔존 정형이 다양하였지만 본래의 축조환경을 고려한 목관이 사용되면서 그것을 흙이나 돌을 덮었다는 공통적 축조환경을 보인다는 점, 나아가 그것이 마한의 묘제전통과 관련 있을 것도 주목하여야 할 것 같다.

This dissertation seeks to reexamine Seoul Seokchon-dong Baekje's Burial Site for gaining clear insight into Baekje's burial system of early period. The Seokchon-dong burial site is the representative of Hanseong-Baekje period's burial site. It's acknowledged that the ground contains the tombs of Baekje's nobility. The ground is known for having various types of tombs including Stone-mound tomb, Pit tomb, and Stone-lined tomb. But the latest examination of diverse burial sites carried out at the Baekje Heights also brings up some important questions such as; 'how is it that a single burial site can contain so diverse types of tombs?; 'is Stone-mound tomb really Baekjean?'; 'why is there no similarity between the Seokchon-dong Burial site and other Baekje's burial site?' Considering the profound nature of these questions, it would require a careful analysis of data and the study results. Although excavation and study of the Seokchon-dong Burial Site have been carried out from variety of angles, and with focuses, it can be said that there was a limit in understanding the burial site as a whole. In addition, a bit of inconsistency emerges concerning remains and tomb features. In terms of archeological evidence along with tomb features, relics, and comparative data, there's no basis to assume Stone-mound tomb as a Baekjean burial. In particular, the Stone-mound tomb is acknowledged only in comparison to Goguryeo's counterpart. If anything, the Seokchon-dong Burial Site requires reclassification of its tombs and non-tombs. On the other hand, the fact that the Seokchon-dong Site's Stone-mound tomb remains stand in contrast to the Gongju Suchon-ri's, and Songsan-ri's counterparts should draw attention. Although the three share some similarities, it should be pointed out that the Stone-mound tombs in Gongju's two burial grounds show signs that they were used for bier funeral. Further attention should be given to the fact that the wooden coffins were covered with soil or stone in connection to their natural surroundings, and that the feature could be in some way related to the burial system of Mahan.
