이 논문은 1937년본 바리공주를 중심으로 문화적 함의를 가진 길을 탐색하였다. 이승과 저승이라고 하는 수평적 공간의 일차원이 저승의 분화에 의한 천당과 지옥으로 갈라지면서 이차원으로 승화된 점을 다루었다. 본래의 무속이라고 하는 종교에 불교가 복합되면서 이루어진 결과를 바리공주라고 하는 무속신화에서 반영하고 있다는 점을 분석하였다. 특히 이 무속신화에서는 종래의 근접하는 내용의 민담이 없었으나 자료를 넓게 탐색한 결과 유형적으로 일치하는 민담이 있었으며, 이 민담을 세계적인 민담으로 확장할 가능성을 모색하게 되었다. 특히 우리나라의 민담유형과 세계의 민담유형이 일치하는 것으로 판명되었으며, 그것이 저승이라고 하는 곳에 도달하여 새로운 생명을 얻는 것을 핵심으로 하고 있다. 무속신화의 문화적 함의를 가진 길은 저승여행, 영원한 생명, 부활과 신직 부여 등을 다중적으로 함축하고 있음이 드러났다. 바리공주의 여행은 이러한 다차원의 의미를 조명하고 있으며, 연구의 이면에 존재하는 특수한 의미까지 포괄하면 서사적 원천이 다항적으로 작동하면서 오랜 시간의 누적을 통해서 이루어졌음이 판명되었다. 이 논의는 한계가 있다. 특정한 하나의 판본만을 대상으로 했기 때문이다. 바리공주의 수많은 자료를 집적한 결과를 볼 때에 이 연구는 기본적 제한점이 분명하다. 그러나 다른 자료와 확대될 가능성은 있으나 이 자료의 기본적 면모가 분명하기 때문에 이 자료를 통한 논의는 값이 있는 탐구의 결과를 산출한다.
