玉垂 趙冕鎬는 최근에 들어 19세기의 중요한 시인으로 주목받기 시작한 문인이다. 그런데 아직까지 그의 산문 작품에 대해서는 본격적인 고찰이 이루어지지 않은 가운데, 그의 산문 작품은 다소 문학성이 떨어진다는 지적이 있기도 하였다. 그러나 본고의 검토 결과, 조면호의 산문 작품 중에는 상당한 수준의 문학성을 담보한 작품이 적지 않으며, 문학사적인 측면에서 주목할만한 특징들이 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 본고는 조면호 산문의 특징을 다음 세 가지 측면으로 정리하였다.첫째, 조면호의 산문 가운데에는 ‘꿈’을 모티브로 하는 작품이 상당수를 차지하고 있는데, 이는 그의 전체적인 문학세계와 깊은 연관을 맺고 있는 현상이라 할 수 있다. 조면호는 매우 왕성한 창작욕을 지닌 시인이어서 꿈속에서까지 시를 짓는 일이 비일비재하였다. 또한 만년의 조면호는 삶은 한바탕의 꿈에 불과하다는 허무적 세계관에 기울기도 하였는데, 이러한 점들이 어우러져 조면호의 문학에는 꿈을 제재로 한 작품들이 다수 등장한다. 이러한 작품들은 낭만적이고 자유로운 상상력을 보여주고 있어 조면호라는 시인을 이해함에 큰 도움을 준다. 둘째, 조면호는 경화사족의 일원이었기에 그의 산문에는 경화사족의 문화 향유 양상이 직접적으로 반영되어 있다. 조선후기 경화사족의 문화에 대해 최근 학계의 관심이 고조되고 있는데, 19세기 중후반기 경화사족의 문화 향유 양상을 담고 있는 조면호의 산문은 중요한 연구 자료라 할 수 있다. 특히 주목되는 바는 조면호가 당시 경화사족 문화의 소비적 측면을 비판하고 있다는 점이다. 이러한 점은 경화사족의 문화를 긍정적인 측면으로만 이해하려하는 연구 시각에 일정한 시사를 준다고 하겠다. 셋째, 조면호의 산문 문학은 시대의 문제를 외면하지 않고 있다. 그는 격변기를 맞아 제 역할을 해내지 못하는 사계층의 무능을 호되게 비판하기도 하고, 조선과 중국이 공통의 문화를 매개로 연대하여 서양세력에 맞서야 한다는 의론을 펼치기도 하였다. 이러한 조면호 산문 문학의 성취와 특징들은 19세기 한문학이 보수화되었다는 학계 일부의 통념과 상반되는 것이라 할 수 있는데, 조면호의 산문 작품을 계기로 하여 이 시기에 대한 한문학 연구가 보다 활발해질 필요가 있다 하겠다.

Oksu, Cho Myeon-ho is a writer who is highly estimated as a great poet of 19th century. Though his prose has not been fully researched, there is a comment that his prose literature is poor. But as a result of this thesis, we concluded that his prose literature obtained high level literary trait. This thesis categorized distinctive features of his prose literature into three sort. First, there are many interesting pieces which is motivated by dream. These pieces are related with his romantic character and nihilism in later years. Second, Cho Myeon-ho is one of the kyung-hwa-sa-jok(京華士族). Therefor his prose reflected the culture of the kyung-hwa-sa-jok. Recently concerns about the culture of the kyung-hwa-sa-jok is rising in academic circles, so it is necessary to regard his prose to good material. Cho Myeon-ho's prose criticize lavishness of that culture. Third, Cho Myeon-ho's prose do not avoid social task. He severly criticized the inability of the noble men who did not responded to the new historical situation. And he asserted the solidarity with Chosŏn and China against western power, it is the origin of the Discourses of East Asia. This thesis wish that achievement of the Cho Myeon-ho's prose literature will be the start of debating on the preconception that the history of korean literature in 19th century is retrogressive.
