This study aims at reviewing the previous studies on the 19th-century Korea’s Chinese literature and suggesting future directions in the studies. The best feature of the previous studies on the 19th century Korea’s Chinese literature is that the subjects of studies centered on the first half of the 19th century. This phenomenon comes from that they regard the first half of the 19th century as the extension of the 18th century. And, even about that they recognize the 19thcentury as a ‘retrogressive’ period, this paper considers it is because they approach the 19th century from the perspective of the 18th century. Accordingly, this paper suggests that a unique point of view of the 19th century should be established and the study methods closer to the reality of the 19th century should be developed. This study suggests a study on expanding the base and popularization of the 19th-century Korea’s Chinese literature as one way. That is, this study surveys [the phenomenon that Korea’s Chinese literature was expanded to the lower classes and, at the same time, popularized] and [the phenomenon it sought quality enhancement and specialization] with the key words of ‘women’ and ‘play.’ Specifically, this intends to reveal the aspects that the popularization of the 19th-century Korea’s Chinese literature was combined with the trend toward expanding the base and also, with the trend toward quality enhancement and specialization, centering on Gil-ju Hong. In conclusion, this paper suggests that if popularization, expanding the base and quality enhancement of the 19th-century Korea’s Chinese literature can be interpreted from a perspective of cultural history, a new trend beyond the phenomenon that the vitality and vigor in the 18th century disappeared in the 19th -century Korea’s Chinese literature might be discovered.
