본고는 지금까지의 유치환에 대한 연구가 일부분에 한정된 편협하고 피상적인 수준에서 이루어졌다는 문제의식을 바탕으로 하여 유치환의 시는 ‘진술의 시’로 대표되는 것이 아니라 다른 유형인 ‘서정의 시’와 대별된다고 보는 데서 출발하고 있다. 나아가 ‘진술의 시’와 ‘서정의 시’는 서로 분리되어 있는 것이 아니라 유치환 시의 전체적 세계 안에서 서로 밀접하게 관련되어 있다는 가정을 세우고 이것이 어떻게 의미 구조화되어 있는지를 탐색하였다. 이에 따라 유치환의 ‘서정의 시’는 ‘진술의 시’에 비해 주목되기 힘든 요소를 지니고 있지만 실질적으로 양과 질적인 면에서 ‘진술의 시’에 버금가는 중요성을 지니고 있음을 살펴보았는데, 그것은 ‘서정의 시’는 양적으로 ‘진술의 시’와 비슷할 뿐 아니라 ‘서정의 시’가 유치환의 실존 가운데 특정 순간에 쓰였다는 점을 통해 밝혀보았다. 즉 ‘서정의 시’는 시인이 자아를 내세우기보다는 자아를 망각하고 소멸시키는 순간에 발생하였고 또한 그 순간 시인은 지극한 평온과 행복을 누릴 수 있었던 것이다. 이를 통해 대상 및 초월자에 대한 순응과 순화에서 비롯되는 ‘서정의 순간’이야말로 절대가 현현되는 때임을 알 수 있었다. ‘서정의 시’가 이러한 성격을 지녔다는 것은 ‘진술의 시’와 그것이 서로를 가리키는 관계, ‘진술의 시’가 절대에 대해 ‘말해주는’ 외연의 시라면 ‘서정의 시’ 절대가 무엇인지를 실질적으로 ‘보여주는’ 내포의 시임을 말해준다. 한편 그의 모든 시를 통해 ‘절대’를 구현하고자 한 데서 알 수 있듯 유치환의 실존에서 ‘절대’의 지평은 매우 중요하며 가까이 있었다. 실제로 유치환은 산문을 통해 ‘절대’가 무한의 세계, 만유의 세계임을 말하면서 인간 세계가 만유와 닿아있음을 말하고 있다. 이러한 점들은 유치환 시가 어느 지점에 놓여 있는가를 보다 명확하게 드러내준다. 유치환 시는 인간 세계와 절대 세계가 만나는 지점에서 쓰여졌던 것이다. 절대세계는 인간세계와 분리되어 있지만 특정 순간 인간의 체험 가운데 그 모습을 현현시킨다. 이러한 순간은 삶 속에서 가능하며 또한 죽음의 순간 전면화될 것인바, 유치환의 시세계는 이러한 순간에 대한 실증적 제시였다고 말할 수 있다.
