The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of three background variables (gender, academic major and self-rated English proficiency) on strategy use of both monolingual Korean and bilingual Korean-Chinese university students and to compare how these two groups are different and similar in terms of strategy use by three variables. The participants of this study were selected from two universities in Korea and China. The students from both universities are undergraduate students majoring in various disciplines (e.g., Social Studies, Humanities, Engineering, and Science). The findings of the monolingual group in this study are consistent with the general findings of previous studies, revealing female monolingual Korean students as more frequent strategy users. The bilingual Korean-Chinese students majoring Humanities, Engineering, and Science reported higher use of strategies than did monolingual Korean students, with the exception of the Social Science majors. The results of the current study revealed a linear relationship between strategy use and self-rated English proficiency of both monolingual Korean and bilingual Korean-Chinese groups.
