본 논문은 『論語』 「泰伯」편의 구성과 주제에 관하여 밝힌 것이다. 지금까지 『論語』는 공자가 제자들, 또는 다른 인물들과 나눈 대화의 기록을 모아놓은 기록으로 인식해왔다. 그러나 각 편마다 일정한 주제와 그 주제를 향한 구성 방식이 있다는 것에 대해서는 큰 관심이 없었다. 이에 대해 관심을 가진 것은 김윤조의 ‘논어 학이편 연구’와 송병렬의 ‘『論語』의 서술방식과 수사에 관한 연구’ 등이다. 「泰伯」편의 구성은 모두 6개 단락군으로 나누어서 보았다. 단락군은 사토 이치로(佐等一郞)가 창안한 방식으로 김윤조가 채택한 방식이다. 하나 이상의 장들을 묶어서 하나의 단락으로 보는 방식이다. 첫 번째 단락군은 「泰伯」편의 1장으로 내용은 천하의 公的인 일을 위해 왕위를 버린 泰伯의 지덕임을 밝혔다. 두 번째 단락군은 2장～7장으로, 내용은 평생을 쌓아도 하기 힘든 것이 지덕임을 밝혔다. 세 번째 단락군은 8～15장으로, 지덕을 기르고 완성시키는 과정을 제시하였다. 네 번째 단락군은 16～17장으로, 지덕을 완성하는 것이 얼마나 어려운 것인가를 제시하였다. 네 번째 단락군은 「泰伯」편 내에서 내용의 전환적인 구실을 하는 단락이다. 다섯 째 단락군은 18～21장이다. 이 단락군은 결말을 맺는 단락군으로 ‘요·순·우·무왕’ 같은 성인들이 천하의 공적인 일을 위해서 천하를 양보하거나 또는 천하를 도탄에서 구해내는 공덕을 쌓아서 지덕을 이루었음을 제시하였다. 이와 같이 「泰伯」편의 단락군들은 서로 산문적인 맥락을 가진 구성체임을 밝혀 내었다. 이를 통해서 「泰伯」편의 주제는 ‘평생동안 수련을 해도 이루기 어려운 것이 지덕이며, 천하를 양보하거나 구해내는 공덕을 이룬 것이 진정한 至德(지극한 덕망)이다.’라는 것도 파악했다. 이상과 같은 『論語』의 「泰伯」편에 대한 연구 결과는 『論語』 「泰伯」편의 이해에 도움을 줄 것이며, 나아가 『論語』를 새롭게 이해할 수 있을 것이다.
This paper studied the structure and the subject of 「Taebaek」 chapter in 『Analects of Confucius』. Until now, 『Analects of Confucius』 has been recognized as a record of the conversation among Confucius, his pupils and others. However, there has not been that much concern about the fact that it has a certain subject, or a structure toward its subject for each chapter. The studies which started to consider this are ‘A study on the process of compilation of The Analects’ by Kim Yun-jo, ‘Study of the narrative manner and rhetoric of 『Analects of Confucius』’ by Song Pyungnyul, and so on. The first paragraph group, which is part 1 of chapter 「Taebaek」, puts forward that it was Taebaek’s perfect virtue that he gave up his King’s position for the public work for the whole country. The second paragraph group, which is from part 2 to part 7, puts forward what is very difficult thing. even if building it for whole life, is the perfect virtue. The third paragraph, from part 8 to part 15, indicated the procedure of developing and completing the perfect virtue. The fourth paragraph group plays a role as a turning point in terms of content within chapter 「Taebaek」. The fifth paragraph group is from part 18 to part 21. This paragraph group is the group that makes conclusion, and indicates that the Saints such as ‘King Yo(堯), King Soon(舜,) King Woo(禹), and King Moo(武)’ accomplished the perfect virtue by building the virtuous deeds that concede the whole country, or save it from distress for public work for the country. Following this, the paragraph groups from chapter 「Taebaek」 were found out that they were the components that have each context in prose. Through this, the subject of chapter 「Taebaek」 was apprehended that the difficult thing to accomplish, even if man practices for his whole life, is the perfect virtue, and it is the true perfect virtue that man accomplishes the works that concede, or save the country. The above research result of the episode 「Taebaek」 in 『The analects of Confucius』 will help to understand it, and furthermore, will be able to understand 『The analects of Confucius』 in a new perspective.
