The purpose of this study is to contrast Korean and Mongolian honorific expressions with the view of contrastive analysis theory, and also find pedagogical implications of teaching Mongolian L1 background learners. For this, this study firstly categorized honorific system of both languages. It’s been a common knowledge that honorific system of Korean is fairly complicated, therefore this paper took Korean- Mongolian directed criterion for suiting the expediency of contrastive analysis. Subsequently, phase of modal-pragmatic contrast of both languages including ‘listener-respect’ and ‘polite-expression’ were analyzed next to morpho-lexical phase such as ‘subject-respect’, ‘lexical-respect’. Consequently, modal-pragmatic phase mostly in ‘listener-respect’ part, there were many differences comparing to ‘lexical-respect’ part discovered many similarities between two languages. It improves the effectiveness of teaching Korean for Mongolian learners than general approach, and does not offer excessive input that are unnecessary in similar grammatical phase. In conclusion, this study suggested several teaching-learning implications and hints for teaching Korean honorific expressions for Mongolian students.
