A Study on Teaching Poetry Writing for Understanding PoetryKim, Jung-WooThe purposes of this study are to find a desirable direction for teaching poetry writing and to develop contents of it. In order to achieve this purposes, I reviewed recent studies related to teaching creative writing and poetry writing, and explored the possibility of new direction and contents of teaching poetry writing with four poems that are of great value. Teaching poetry writing may have two objectives briefly; one is to develop ability to write a poem and the other is to deepen learner's understanding of poetry. This two objectives are all important and have almost equal value. Recently teaching poetry writing has become active, however, it has mainly attached importance to writing a poem as self-expression relatively to understanding poetry. Because creative writing, including poetry writing, had not taught in formal school education for a long time, it is inevitable that the importance of writing and expression is emphasized. From now, it should be to maintain the proper balance between two objectives - writing a poem and understanding of poetry. To attain this objectives, this study suggest contents for teaching poetry writing, as follows; focusing on lyric moment, observing things with new viewpoint and introspection, reconstructing speaker in a poem. These contents are essential not only to write a poem but also to understand what is characteristics of poetry. Experience of poetry writing with the awareness of these contents will enable students to have a deep knowledge about poetry and to obtain an eye to discriminate good poem or desirable writing from others.
