The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of phonics contents used in korean schools to better understand how to implement phonics into the curriculum. To achieve these purposes, a criteria for analysis was created and used to analyze the phonics contents of the fourteen different fourth grade English textbooks as revised by the 2008 revised National English Curriculum. The results from the analysis of the textbooks are as follows. First, all textbook were successful by clearly stating titles like ‘Sounds’,‘Letters and Sounds’, and ‘Phonetics Time’. Secondly, there are wide differences among the textbooks in terms of topic, vocabulary, structure, and activity. Third, it is difficult to find any specific sequence of phonics contents. The result of analysis concludes that some textbooks require revision and a variety of Phonics activities to develop enthusiasm among the teachers and students.
