The purpose of this paper is to give the empirical data on the meaning extensions of English ‘hand’ and Korean ‘son’ and analyze the meaning extensions in regard to the image schemas and also discuss the matches and mismatches of the values between image schemas and within the context. Most of the previous studies focus on the meaning extensions of the body-part terms and the conceptual metaphors for their extensions. This study, however, tries to investigate the meaning extensions in terms of image schemas. This study also investigates the initial values given to their image schemas and their axiological shift and maintenance within the specific contexts. This study contributes to the studies on meaning extensions of body-part terms by providing new perspectives on the methods of analysis.
