본 연구는 <홍길동전>이 홍길동이라는 인물의 인격성장에 관한 서사라고 보고, 이러한 작품의 서사가 현재의 독자들에게도 경험을 매개하는 공감의 요소가 된다고 보았다. 이를 구체적으로 밝히기 위해 <홍길동전>에 드러난 자녀서사의 양상을 밝히고, 홍길동전의 심리 전개에 관해서는 분석심리학적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 홍길동은 아버지의 질서를 극복하고 자신만의 세계를 세웠을 뿐 아니라, 더 나아가서는 아버지의 세계와 화해함으로써 자기실현을 이루었음을 확인하였다. 이러한 <홍길동전>의 자녀서사를 통해 독자는 자신의 자녀서사를 수정하고 보완하여 새로운 자기서사를 창조할 수 있을 것이다.
