고려속요 <서경별곡>은 인간이라면 누구나 겪게 되는 사랑과 이별의 보편적 상황 속에서 화자가 겪고 있는 심리적 갈등을 진솔하게 드러내고 있다. 필자는 이 노래를 통해서 인간이 자신이 감당하기 어려운 객관적 사태를 어떻게 극복하고 받아들이는가에 대한 중요한 시사점을 얻을 수 있다고 생각한다. 이 노래의 화자가 처한 이별의 상황은 적어도 화자에게만큼은 자신의 삶을 정상적으로 유지하기 어려울 정도의 심각한 위협이 되고 있다. 이러한 위협으로부터 벗어나 새로운 삶의 가능성을 확보하는 것은 이 작품의 화자의 삶에서 매우 절실한 과제가 아닐 수 없다. 이런 점에서 이 노래에서 화자가 보여주는 심리적 경과의 의의가 있다. 이러한 관점에서 본고가 주목하고 있는 것은 화자가 보여주고 있는 ‘사후과잉확신 편향(hindsight bias)’이다. ‘사후과잉확신 편향’이란 우리가 어떤 일의 결과를 마치 미리 알고 있었던 것처럼 생각하는 현상을 말한다. 실제로는 매우 충격적인 일이 벌어졌음에도 불구하고 자신은 이미 그 일이 일어날 것이라 예상하고 있었다는 태도를 보이는 것이 사후과잉확신 편향이다. 물론 이 같은 현상은 일종의 인지적 오류이며, 스스로 자신을 기만하는 일이라 말할 수도 있다. 그러나 생각을 조금 달리해 보면, 눈앞에 나타난 믿기 어려운 일을 감당하기 위해서 어느 정도는 필수적인 적응의 방식이라고 볼 수도 있을 것이다. 본고는 <서경별곡>의 화자가 갑작스러운 이별의 사태에 대해 이러한 사후과잉확신 편향을 보이고 있다는 점을 구체적으로 논증하고, 이러한 화자의 심리적 대응이 화자의 삶에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 고찰하여 그 의의와 한계를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 <서경별곡>을 삶에 대한 심각한 위협에 처한 사람의 심리적 치유 과정으로 간주할 때, 이 노래는 위협의 실체를 대상화하고, 그에 대한 통찰을 획득함으로써 더 이상의 무의미한 노력을 기울이지 않음으로써 심리적 안정을 찾고, 새로운 삶을 모색하는 과정을 보여 준다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 특히 이 노래의 마지막 구절은 이별이라는 사태에 대해 거리를 두고자 하는 화자의 의지를 반영한 사후과잉확신 편향이 등장하여 화자의 심리적 치유를 돕고 있는 것으로 생각된다.

Seogyeongbyeolgok[서경별곡], which is one of the Goryeosokyo[고려속요] reveals a woman's true feeling who is facing desperate situation. To the most people to fall in love with, and separate each other is a commonplace affaire. The woman in this song is in the same situation also, but I think that she shows how the hopeless people get over the tragic situation and restart their life. The tragic affair, separation with the lover threaten her whole life. To overcome the threatening is the most important task to the woman. I think that the woman in this song shows an interesting feature about the way of escape from the tragic situation. I think that the characteristic of the woman in this song is the hindsight bias. Hindsight bias is the inclination that people says that they already knew the event could occur only after seeing the event took place actually. This inclination is clearly cognitive mistake, self-deception. But from a different standpoint, this cognitive mistake can help oneself to adapt new circumstances. In this point of view the woman in this song is trying to new circumstances through hindsight bias; in this way she objectify the separation with the lover, get a new vision into human nature, and stop the meaningless effort to hold the lover. I already said that the hindsight bias is clearly self-deception. But I have to say that it can play positive role in our everyday life, the woman in this song is the obvious evidence.
