본고는 그간 부정적인 평가를 받아왔던 <백지의 기록>을 긍정의 차원에서 바라보자는 시도 하에 쓰였다. 그 긍정의 차원이란 인물이 보여주는 정신적 외상과 이를 치유하는 방식을 해명하는 데 초점을 맞추었다는 의미다. 이를 위해 본고에서는 오상원의 <백지의 기록>에 나타난 인물들의 외상을 살펴보면서, 그 치유의 가능성들을 모색해보았다. <백지의 기록>은 전쟁 와중에서 정신적․육체적으로 파괴된 인물들의 정신적 치유 가능성을 모색한 작품이었다. 따라서 전후에 인물들이 겪는 ‘상처’에 집중하면서, 내재화된 외상의 양상을 살펴보고 이를 해명하고자 하였다. 먼저 인물들은 전쟁체험에서 육체적 정신적으로 외상을 입고 제대를 한 터라, 사회생활에 막대한 지장을 느끼고 있었다. 중섭은 육체적 ‘상실’을 통해서 다양한 정신착란을 일으켰고, 중서는 전장에서 경험했던 ‘타락’과 ‘폭력’을 사회생활에서도 연장하고 있었다. 이를 통해 두 인물은 ‘예전의 나’와 ‘현재의 나’ 사이에서 분열을 일으키고 있었다. 곧 인물들은 전쟁에서 얻은 외상을 극복하지 못하고, ‘예전의 기억’을 반복함으로써 고통을 재현해내고 있었다. 극복하지 못한 외상은 보다 심화되어갔는데, 중섭은 동생에 대한 카인콤플렉스와 더불어 어머니에 대한 욕망을 무의식적으로 표출했고, 이로 인해 자살을 기도하기까지 했다. 중서는 술과 담배, 그리고 계집 등에 탐닉하면서, 예전의 순수했던 자기를 잃어가고 있었다. 이때 정연을 기억해내면서 과거의 기억을 상기하려고 하였다. 마지막으로 외상이 심화되어 가면서 파멸로 향했던 인물들이 시간을 의식하고, 자신과 유사한 상처를 입은 사람들과 동일시를 하면서 외상 치유의 가능성을 엿보게 되었다. 먼저 두 인물은 과거의 시간 속에서 살고 있었던 ‘자기’를 인식하게 되면서 자아정체성을 찾고자 하는 희망을 내비쳤다. 그리고 주변 상황(인물)과 관련해서, 중섭은 준과 ‘우리들의 마을’을 통해, 중서는 정연의 상처를 통해 외상 치유의 가능성을 모색했다.
