이 글은 시집 『사슴』의 구조와 표현 형태을 고찰함으로써 이질적 특징을 함께 간직한 시인의 의식을 살피고자 하는 것이다. 즉 이질적인 것으로 보이는 전통적인 것과 서구의 근대적인 특질들이 어떻게 시집의 구조를 이루고 있나 하는 것이었다. 1부는 어린시절 기억의 원형과 자신의 근원 확인이라는 주제로 묶여져 있다. 전통적 소재를 취하나 자기 확인의 질문이라는 점에서 시인은 근대인의 면모를 보인다. 2부는 이미지를 선명하게 드러내고자 하는 기법을 적용한 시들의 묶음이다. 구체어로 대상을 이미지화하려고 한다는 점이 서구 이미지즘 이론의 시어관과도 멀지 않아 보인다. 3부는 2부의 기조를 유지하되 좀더 세련되어, 순간에 역동적 이미지를 그려내는 시들과 슬픔의 감정을 직접 진술하는 시가 섞여 있다. 4부에서는 대상을 바라보는 시선이나 세계 인식의 방법에서 일정한 경계를 넘어서려는 의식이 보인다. 이 의식은 전근대적 현상을 의도적으로 제시하여 대상화한다거나 인용화법을 통해 사실을 전달하는 어법 속에서도 드러난다. 시집 『사슴』을 4부의 묶음으로 엮어 편집하는 과정에서 시를 선택배제하고 배열하는 원칙, 각부의 주제나 형식, 표제어의 의미, 감정을 드러내는 방법, 대상을 바라보는 시선이나 화법 등에서 근대인으로서 백석의 내면 의식이 양면적인 표정으로 드러나 있다.

This essay focuses on the structure and description of Back Suk's anthology Saseum and the poet's different consciousness, which is traditional features and modern characters. The 1st chapter is composed of childhood memories and search for his origin. He selects traditional components, but shows modern characters. The 2nd chapter is a collection of poems with techniques to show images vividly. He focuses concrete images from concrete words, which is comparable with western imagists. The 3rd chapter keeps the principle of vivid images from the 2nd chapter, but reveals more refined description. This chapter includes both works with dynamic images, and works directly describing sorrow and sadness. The 4th chapter maintains objective attitude towards the object and the world, trying to jump over a certain boundary. This chapter intentionally shows pre-modern phenomena, or gives facts with direct quotations. As shown above, the dualism of Back Suk's poetry is apparent not only in the choice of subject matter or his execution of technique, but also in the arrangement and composition of anthology Saseum.
