다문화교육은 차이와 다양성을 강조한다. 이것은 다문화사회의 특징이기도 하다. 그러나 차이를 너무 강조하다보면 상대방을 억압하고 배제시키는 차별이 될 가능성이 있다. 상호간의 차이를 인정하고 서로를 이해하는 상호성을 바탕으로 하는 입장이 상호문화주의이다. 다문화사회에서는 근대적인 동화주의적 관점으로서는 해석할 수 없는 전혀 새로운 관점을 요구하고 있다. 다시 말하면 다문화사회에서는 탈근대적인 다문화주의적인 관점이 필요하다. 근대적인 관점에서 탈근대적인 관점으로의 전환을 가져다 준 철학적 이론이 해석학(Hermeneutics)이다. 해석학은 상호문화주의 관점에서 다문화사회를 이해할 수 있는 이론적 근거를 제시해 주고 있다. 상호문화주의와 해석학의 연관성을 바탕으로 우리나라 다문화교육의 현주소를 분석하고 바람직한 다문화교육의 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 첫째, 다문화교육은 자기이해이다. 타자와 타문화를 이해하는 것은 곧 자기를 이해하는 것이다. 따라서 다문화교육은 정체성 교육이다. 둘째, 다문화교육은 ‘우리 안의 다름’을 이해한다. 우리나라 안에 있는 다른 문화를 이해함으로써 서로를 이해할 수 있는 계기를 마련해 준다. 따라서 다문화교육은 차이와 다양성의 교육이다. 셋째, 다문화교육은 차별을 배제하는 교육이다. 따라서 다문화교육은 서로의 차이를 인정하고 배려함으로써 새로운 우리의 다문화성을 만들어가는 교육이다. 이상의 다문화교육의 성격을 바탕으로 도덕교육에의 시사점을 발견할 것이다. 즉 도덕교육은 다양한 문화가 존재하고 그 문화는 나름의 의미와 가치를 가지고 있기 때문에 그 가치를 서로 인정하고 서로 이해하는 것을 바탕으로 편견을 없애고 더불어 살아가는 다문화사회를 만드는 것이 그 목적이다.
Multicultural education emphasizes the differences and diversity, and it is also a feature of multicultural society. However, too much emphasis on differences has potential to lead to suppression and exclusion, then to discrimination. Multiculturalism should be based on mutual understanding and acceptance of each other's culture. The modern assimilationism view needs to be replaced with an entirely new view in today's multicultural society. In other words, anti-modernistic multicultural view is required in multicultural society. The philosophical transition from modernism to anti- modernism view is a theory called “Hermeneutics.”Hermeneutics provide the fundamental theoretical reasons in order to understand multicultural society. I would like to suggest a few ideas to analyze the current status of inter-culturalism and address and valid direction on multiculture education. First, Multicultural education is self-understanding. Understanding others and their cultures also mean understanding oneself. Therefore, multiculture education is an identity education. Second, Multicultural education is about “differences within us.” Recognizing the other cultures in our country will provide more evident to understanding other cultures. Therefore, Multicultural education is an education of differences and diversity. Third, Multicultural education is to exclude discrimination. Therefore, considering others' differences and understanding them will lead to a better multicultural society. The three directions above will allow us to implicate the moral education. Therefore. The goal is to find ways to live along together without discrimination by acknowledging diversity and different cultures and each has its own values and meanings.
