The goal of this paper is to establish educational contents of negative expression ‘-지 않다’ to improve the communication ability of Korean language learners. Speech acts are described according to functions by analyzing an aspect of using negative expression ‘-지 않다’ in Korean spoken corpus. Negative expression ‘-지 않다’ has various usages in addition to the meaning of the negative, but only ‘to express the negative of some behavior or situation’ is being taught in the field. Accordingly, it examines various functions of ‘-지 않다’ using Korean spoken corpus. Used in the form of interrogative sentence, negative expression ‘-지 않다’ has functions of checking and questioning in Korean spoken corpus. Used chunk expressions, it also has functions of agreeing and disagreeing. In spoken language, ‘to negate’ in negative questions is used more frequently than that in declarative sentences. It analyzes negative expression ‘-지 않다’ presented on the Korean language textbooks. It also suggests an effective syllabus by each learning-stage reflecting the result.
