해방 후 한국 근현대사에 있어서 장택상은 정치인으로서 많은 활동을 하였는데, 미군정기에는 다소 의외라 할 수 있는 수도의 치안업무를 담당하는 수도경찰청장으로서 활동하였다. 장택상의 성장배경 및 사상적 형성과정을 보면 치안과는 다소 무관한 것처럼 보인다. 그러한 그가 미군정기 수도경찰청장으로써 치안업무를 담당하계 된 결정적인 계기는 송진우 암살사건과 관련된다고 본다. 그의 정치적 동지이자 리더였던 송진우가 좌익세력에 의해 암살당함으로써 그의 치안에 대한 인식이 전환되었고, 이를 계기로 미군정기간 동안 수도경찰청장으로서 많은 경찰활동을 수행하게 되었던 것이다. 미군정기에 장택상은 남한의 치안혼란을 기도하는 좌익에 대한 통제에 많은 성과를 거두었다. 이와 관련하여 그는 특히, ‘학병동맹사건’(1945.9)과 ‘조선정판사 위조지폐사건’(1946.5)에 대해 많은 역사적 의미를 부여하였다. 이 두 사건을 계기로 남한에서 활동하는 좌익세력이 근거를 잃게 되었다고 보았던 것이다. 그런데, 장택상은 치안유지 및 좌익세력 통제를 위하여 친일경찰을 중용하게 된다. 해방 후 일제시대 식민통치의 앞잡이 노릇을 한 친일경찰은 사실상 설 자리가 없었다. 그러나 당시의 혼란한 치안상황과 정치적 역학관계 속에서 일제시대에 활동한 많은 친일경찰들은 다시 미군정경찰로 임용되었다. 장택상의 좌익에 대한 지나친 통제와 친일경찰 중용 문제는 그의 정체성과 관련하여 이후 논란의 대상이 되어 왔다. 미군정기 장택상이 수도경찰청장으로서 수행한 활동은 다소 환경종속적인 면이 없지 않다고 본다. 즉, 그가 취한 좌익에 대한 태도와 친일경찰 중용 문제는 미군정의 기본 방침과도 그 맥을 같이 하기 때문이다. 그러나 그러한 상황 속에서 장택상은 주체적이고 독자적인 한국경찰상을 실현하고자 하는 의지를 가지고 있었으며, 더 나아가 극도로 혼란한 수도치안 상황에서 보여준 노력은 한국경찰사에서 의미를 가진다고 본다.
After the Liberation, in the history of modern Korea, 'Jang, Taek Sang' as a politician has more the position of 'the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Agency'(CMPA). Despite of such thing, he served as the CMPA in the Era of U.S Military Government, which was closed related by the assassination of 'Song, Jin U'. In fact, to consider his young, it seems that he is not related to security somewhat. But the accident of 'Song, Jin U' who is the political congenial and leader to 'Jang' changed Jang's mind about public security, and the recommendation of his companion makes him to assume the CMPA. After this, 'Jang' performed many thing related the control of the left group which tries to cause the confusion of South Korea. Especially, 'Jang' had historical significance so called 'the accident of the alliance of student soldier' and 'the accident of forged note of Joseon Print Office'. These two cases make the chance of destroy of the left group in South Korea in result. However, 'Jang' gave an important position about the police of Pro-Japanese to control the left group. In fact, the police of Pro-Japanese who roled as guide in the era of the Japanese Empire lose his way after the Liberation. But 'Jang' couldn't help using the professionalism of the police of Pro-Japanese to overcome the extreme confusion of the public security. But the overacted control of the left and the leaning of the police of Pro-Japanese has remained the arguments related to 'Jang's identity. But, it seems that 'Jang' had thought that to neglect the activity of the left caused the obstacle of the development of democracy in the situation of the times. Of course, 'Jang's performance in the Era of U.S Military Government has the sides of subordination of environment. Namely, 'Jang's two attitude(described above) basically same the basis strategy of U.S Military Government. But, despite of the fact, 'Jang' tried to realize the independent status of Korean police, more over in the situation of disorder and anomie, 'Jang's efforts and passions to build the independent new nation in disregard of his life can't be neglected never.
