이 논문은 일제시대 민간 일본인 차원에서 고서간행활동을 벌인 단체와 그들의 출간활동, 그리고 그것에 따라 조선에 대한 인식이 왜곡된 현상에 대해 살핀 것이다.일제시대 고서간행활동을 했던 단체로는 1908년 샤쿠오 ??조를 중심으로 창설된 조선고서간행회, 1910년 호소이 하지매가 창설하여 이듬해 아오야기 츠나타로에게 경영권을 넘긴 조선연구회, 1920년 호소이 하지메가 설립한 자유토구사가 있다. 이들 단체는 조선의 역사, 지리, 문화에 관한 다양한 서적을 편찬하였는데, 거기에 서문을 보태어 독서 방향을 안내하되 조선인의 특성 중 부정적인 성향이 드러나도록 왜곡한 정황이 확실히 드러난다. 이런 정황은 고소설 분야 간행물에까지도 마찬가지로 확인된다. 또 고서간행활동의 중추적인 역할을 했던 호소이의 경우를 예로 삼아 그의 활동내력과 조선에 대한 관점을 살피고 그가 우리 고소설을 어떻게 보고 어떻게 안내했는가를 살폈다. 특별히 자유토구사에서 「장화홍련전」을 발행할 때 그가 적은 글을 통해 살필 때, 그가 조선에 대해 심각한 편견과 불순한 의도를 가진 것이 잘 드러났다. 문제는 여기에서 그치지 않는다. 호소이가 가진 조선에 대한 이러한 의식이나 발간 의도는 같은 시기 활동한 다른 일본인에게서도 공통적으로 발견된다는 사실이며, 이는 같은 시기에도 이후 시기에도 많은 사람들에게 영향을 미쳤다는 사실이다. 그 영향이 클수록 조선에 대한 그들의 인식은 편견으로 빠질 수밖에 없는 것이다.

In that time, there are three institutes to collect the classics of the Chosun Dynasty and to study the history and national characteristics of the Chosun Dynasty. That institute are the Chosun Dynasty Study Institute, Publication Associate for Ancient Books and Jayutogusa. These published books about the classics of the Chosun Dynasty as well as its politics, economy, society, culture, industry, history and old-novel. In order to get the bearings of the situation, I make a book list that institutes are publish. Next, I researched that published book was distorted sample by that institutes. And I analysis Hosoi's activity and his a piont of view about chosun's old-novel. In conclusion, I'd like to say that institutes selected a publication to twist the character of Chosun. A branch of old-novel falls under the same context.
