「용궁부연록」은 물의 세계인 용궁을 여행하고 귀환하는 서사이지만, 천지가 소통하는 서사와 상통하는 부분이 많다. 특히나 「용궁부연록」에서는 용궁의 세계는 천상의 세계와 매우 흡사하다. 천상과 땅을 넘나드는 이야기가 신화 속에 나온다면, 이 소설에는 그러한 흔적이 남아 있다. 이를 바탕으로 이 논문은 이 소설을 천지소통서사와 연관하여 작품을 이해하는데 목적이 있다. 소설 속에서 주인공은 두 세계가 단절되어 있다는 것을 명확히 인식하고 있었는데도 불구하고, 저 세계와 소통할 수 있었다. 그가 저 세계와 소통하게 되는 것은 뛰어난 글쓰기 능력 때문이었다. 일반적으로 글쓰기는 문자와 문장을 운용할 수 있는 능력이며, 이를 통해 타자와 소통을 한다. 글쓰기를 통해 소통하는 ‘타자’란 언어 규칙을 함께 공유하는 존재이다. 언어 규칙을 공유한다는 것은 타자와 동일한 지평에서 사유를 한다는 것을 뜻한다. 한생의 글쓰기가 이 세계를 넘어서 저 세계에까지 전해졌다면 그는 이계의 존재와 소통의 규칙을 공유하고 있다. 이런 면에서 본다면 한생은 유가적 선비가 하는 것과 다른 글쓰기를 했던 셈이고, 한생은 유가적인 선비라기보다 샤먼과 비슷한 점이 많다. 천상과 소통하는 신화는 인간 스스로 욕망을 조절할 수 있던 때의 이야기를 담고 있다. 이러한 유형의 신화에서는 신과 인간은 화목했으며 사람은 신의 도움으로 인해 풍족하고 행복하였다. 그러나 인간의 과잉 욕망으로 천신이 화가 나서 천지는 단절되었다. 천지 소통의 신화들은 소멸되어 없어진 것이 아니라 설화의 장으로 흘러들어 갔다. 전기 소설이 설화의 장에서 생성되었다고 한다면, 그 안에서 천지 소통의 신화적 요소 역시 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 「용궁부연록」을 천지가 소통하는 ‘신화’라고 할 수는 없다. 다만 그런 흔적들이 남아있는 소설이라고 할 수 있다. 한생의 글쓰기는 신이한 무엇인가가 담겨 있고, 그것은 만물을 생성하는 힘을 지니고 있다. 주인공은 천지가 소통하는 경험을 통해 잠시나마 행복한 낙원의 세계를 맛보고 돌아왔다. 그러나 현실 사회에서 글쓰기는 더 이상 만물을 생성하는 힘으로 이어지지 않는다. 그는 천지가 소통했던 행복한 순간을 경험하고 돌아왔지만, 역설적으로 자기가 발디딘 이 세계와 저 세계의 간극이 메워질 수 없음을 오히려 깨닫게 된다. 그러니 그에게 현실로 귀환이란 절망적인 이 세계를 환기하는 사건이었고, 이 세계에서 자취를 감출 수밖에 없었다. 신화에서는 천지가 소통했다 단절하는 이야기를 담고 있지만, 「용궁부연록」은 천지가 단절되었다가 소통하는, 신화와는 반대의 내용을 담고 있다.

The purpose of this study was to discuss the epic background of 「Yong- gungbuyeonnok」. 「Yonggungbuyeonnok」 has a different background compared to the other four books of 『Geumosinhwa』. Although 『Geumosinhwa』 Book 5 also travels to the other world and returns to reality after meeting the existences in the other world, 「Yonggungbuyeonnok」 is different from the other four books. The five books of 『Geumosinhwa』 are interrelated, and it is necessary to explore their aesthetic characteristics and principles. However, the interpretation may not match the background of the novels if you study the five books based on the premise of homogeneity; this is particularly true for 「Yonggungbuyeonnok」. This study finds the start of the novel from the mythology of communication of Universe. The mythology of communication of Universe portrays the time when men and nature were in harmony and explains the reason for the disconnection of communication as the exceeding desire of mankind. The mythology of disconnection of communication of Universe did not disappear, but circulated in the form of fable and appeared as biographies or short stories. 「Yonggungbuyeonnok」 is about the communication of Universe in the era where the Universe is disconnected. This study thought that the ability to make the Universe communicate is what makes the main character’s writing special. No other studies have discussed ‘writing’ actively. This study discussed ‘writing’ from a different perspective. If Han Saeng’s writing goes beyond this world, he shares the rules of communication with the existences in the other world. Han Saeng is similar to a shaman rather than a typical Confucian scholar as he travels to the other world for communication. Han Saeng could make the Universe communicate again with his special writing skills. 「Yonggungbuyeonnok」 is not a ‘mythology’ where the Universe communicates. But it is a biographical novel that has some signs of communication of Universe.
