현재 우리는 커다란 문화적 전환을 경험하고 있다. 그 변화는 이미 우리 삶 깊숙이 진행되고 있을지도 모르는 그러한 것이다. 그 때문에 우리는 긴장과 혼란을 겪고 있고, 그러한 변화의 중요한 차원을 전자기술이라는 커뮤니케이션 기술이 차지한다. 이 변화의 의미를 탐색하는 것이 본 논문의 목적이자 마샬 맥루한의 미디어론을 연구한 이유이기도 하다. 맥루한에 의하면 현재 우리가 겪고 있는 변화는 인류가 경험하는 두 번째의 은하계의 변화이다. 전자기술이라는 새로운 커뮤니케이션 기술을 제대로 이해하고 그것을 인간의 자율성과 커뮤 니케이션 자체의 회복이라는 차원에서 위치지우기 위해서는 첫 번째 은하계가 인간의 커뮤니케이션을 어떻게 왜곡시켰는지를 이해하는 것이 우선된다. 에서 맥루한은 활자와 이를 중심으로 한 근대 문명의 역사적 형성과정을 관찰하고 그것을 비판한다. 새로운 은하계에 대한 맥루한의 기대와 바램은 근대 문명이 잃어버린 말과 커뮤니케이션 생명력을 회복하고자 하는데 있다.
This paper deals with Marshall McLuhan"s theory on media in order to understand the cultural transformation we are going through symbolized by "information", "image", and "globalization". The modem procedure doesn"t help a lot for this exploration, which is the reason McLuhan prefers aphorisms to logical explanation. McLuhan has been blamed unfairly as a "technology determinist" admiring electronic technology and the blames are usually based on . The truth is, on the contrary, that he admires human being in natural situation and criticizes technology which oppresses and distorts human natural senses and organic communications. In , McLuhan explores the meaning of modernity focusing upon alphabet and typography. Typography led the transformation from oral culture to literary culture. In oral culture, the five senses of man were alive and interacted freely so that people weren"t forced to experience the split between individual and community, head and heart, myth and fact, wisdom and knowledge. Alphabet and typography changed sense ratio in which vision held supremacy over other senses. Typographic procedure based characteristics of modernity such as fragmentation, uniformity, causality, linearity, which made people impaired and communication fossilized. The ground of McLuhan"s much hope from electronic technology is that it can restore whole human senses and live communication again. It is rather his hope than prediction. He just indicates the meaning of the new galaxy abundantly left the realization of his hope open. It depends upon as what we understand it.
