본 논문은 온-오프 뉴스룸 통합에 따라 뉴스조직 간부의 통제기능이 어떻게 달라지는가를 분석한 연구이다. 효율적 뉴스생산을 위해 필요한 간부통제는 테크놀로지에 의해 영향을 받는데 특히 뉴스조직의 환경변화가 급격하게 일어나는 온-오프 뉴스룸 통합에 따른 변화를 분석하고자 했다. 이를 위해 디지털 테크놀로지로 인해 저널리즘 생태계의 변화, 뉴스룸 통합에 따른 뉴스생산과정의 변화, 그리고 뉴스룸 통합에 의한 생산관행의 변화가 간부의 통제기능에 미치는 영향을 연구문제로 상정했다. 분석결과 디지털 테크놀로지의 등장은 독립인터넷뉴스, 포털 등의 뉴스공급기능을 창출하면서 저널리즘 생태계를 확장시킨다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이런 저널리즘 생태계의 확장은 뉴스생산과정의 변화로 이어졌다. 마감시간과 출입처 관행과 같은 전통적인 저널리즘에서 핵심적인 생산관행들이 수정되는 과정에서 온라인부문과 오프라인부문 간의 갈등이 발생하기도 한다. 생산관행의 변화는 또 간부의 기능을 바꾸는 데 통제 중심에서 조정 및 관리가 강조되는 ‘느슨한 통제’의 성격으로 달라지는 것으로 분석됐다. 이를 종합하면 뉴스내용생산을 둘러싼 환경적 요소, 조직적 요소, 인적 요소 등이 서로 상관관계를 갖고 뉴스생산에 영향을 미친다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
This study examines how news executives' controlling function in traditional newsrooms has changed in the digital media environment, especially where offline newsroom converges with online one. As digital technology develops, there may be some changes concerning news executives' controlling function. So far, however, researchers have not paid enough attention to the changes taking place in the pattern of news production and the managerial function of news executives in it. With a view to identifying technological impacts on news executives' control mechanism, this study proposes three research questions: first, how does digital technology transforms journalism ecosystem; second, what are the impacts of the newsroom convergence on news production process; third, whether news executives' controlling function is changed by new routines of news production created in newsroom convergence. Findings in this study show that the changed media environment has had significant impacts on the way of news production and the managerial function of news executives. Independent Internet news organizations and portal news service widened journalism ecosystem, and enlarged the food chain of news stories from breaking news to op-eds. They supply ideas of news stories as well as filter mainstream media. This transformation of journalism ecosystem has had direct impacts on news production process. Most importantly, it tends to destroy the definite deadline and beat practices with a non-linear production process. Routines of executives' role have changed from controlling reporters to organizing their activities in order to support and coordinate news production process. In conclusion, the changed media environment with diverse news organizations, the changed organizational structure of news production, and the human elements engaged in news production are the main factors in newsroom convergence, and the one concerning news executives' controlling function, in particular.
