장지연의 ‘친일 논란’을 어떻게 볼 것인가? 이 논문은 그의 행적 속에 ‘친일적’인 것과 ‘민족적’인 것이 혼재하고 있었다는 사실에 주목, 그와 같은 민족주의자에게 상반된 두 경향이 공존할 수 있었던 이유를 사상의 내적 발전과정을 통해 탐구해 보았다. 이를 위해 설정한 연구과제는 그의 세계관이 전통적인 유교적 세계관에서 얼마나 변화된 것인지, 또 그와 유사한 배경을 가진 신채호와는 얼마나 다른가라는 점이다. ‘사대’와 ‘중화’를 축으로 하는 전통적 세계관의 특징은 ‘현실’과 ‘관념’ 간의 상관관계를 통해 고찰하였고, 장지연과 신채호의 세계관은 그들이 사회진화론을 어떻게 수용하였고 망국이라는 상황 변화 속에서 그것을 어떻게 극복해 갔는지를 통해 살펴보았다. 장지연에게서는 전통적인 유교적 세계관의 특징이 지속된 반면, 신채호에게서는 그것이 초극되고 있음을 알 수 있고, 이 차이를 통해 전자의 ‘변절’이 갖는 의미를 이해할 수 있다.
Recently there has been some social arguments on Chang Ji-yeon for his so-called ‘betrayal’ and some of them seems too emotional or not fair enough. Then what would be the more practical point of view on this problem? This paper suggests that we first note the coexistence of conflicting inclinations in him which are the ‘nationalistic’ and the ‘pro-Japanese,’ and explore the reason of it. The subject for this research are as follows; To compare the world-view of Chang Ji-yeon with that of precedented era and that of Shin Chae-ho, the most alike but different thinker of his time, by analyzing their way of understanding of social Darwinism. The result reveals that Chang to the end had remained in the realm of traditional Confucian world-view which Shin thoroughly overcame and from this difference we can see what Chang’s ‘betrayal’ really means.
