이 연구는 여성노동자의 인터넷 이용이 직종과 성별의 관계에 따라 어떠한 디지털 격차를 보이며 생산직과 사무직이라는 직종의 성격에 따라 인터넷 활용 방식과 의미가 어떻게 구성되는가를 고찰한다. 먼저 양적 분석결과, 인터넷 이용률과 이용시간은 성별보다 직종에 따라 디지털 격차를 크게 나타냈다. 즉 사무직종에서는 여성이 남성보다 인터넷 이용률에 오히려 약간 앞서는 것으로 나타난 반면 생산직에서는 남성이 여성의 약 3배 더 많은 인터넷 이용률과 이용시간을 보여주었다. 달리 말해 인터넷 이용격차의 문제는 여성노동자 내부의 직종 간에 훨씬 심각한 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 사무직과 생산직의 상이한 노동조건과 환경이 여성노동자들의 일상적 인터넷 접근과 이용을 다르게 구조화하는 것 역시 심층면접을 통해 드러났다. 구체적으로, 사무직 여성노동자들의 인터넷 경험과 활용방식은 ‘업무 연결형’이라 부를 수 있는데 인터넷 이용이 작업도구로서뿐만 아니라 대인 간 커뮤니케이션 매체로도 기능하며 업무에 대한 자긍심과 자기계발의 의미를 부여하는 것으로 나타났다. 이에 비해 생산직은 ‘업무 분리형’으로서 주로 오락과 실용적 이용에 한정되는 것을 발견할 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 인터넷 활용과 디지털 격차의 논의가 동질적인 일반적 범주로서의 ‘여성’이 아닌 구체적 맥락에 위치한 특정 존재로서 ‘여성’에 대한 연구로 정세화될 필요성을 시사한다.
The paper aims to investigate if there are digital gaps found among Korean women labors according to sex and work type and how women labors’ experiences of Internet access and Internet usages are constructed in their workplace. By analyzing a national survey on life table, and adopting in-depth group interviews, the paper found that digital gaps between groups with different work types are wider than those between different gender groups. In concrete, for the office labors(white- collar workers), women turn out to use the Internet slightly more than men, while for the workshop labors(blue-collar workers), men use the Internet three times more than women do. In other words, the digital gap for the Internet use turns out to be salient and substantial between women labor groups with different work types. Moreover, the interview findings reveal that the different working conditions of office and workshop constitute the ways of women labors’ daily Internet access and usage in different shapes. The office women labors’ Internet usages and experiences can be characterized as the ‘task-related type’ in which the Internet functions to be not only a work tool but also a medium for interpersonal communication. In contrast, workshop labors’ Internet usage can be characterized as ‘task-irrelevant type’ which is limited for entertainment and practical purposes.
