본 논문은 한국에서 전개되고 있는 다문화주의 논의에 대한 반성적 성찰을 목적으로 한다. 미디어에서의 다문화주의에 관한 구성을 관찰하기 위하여 2000년 이후의 ‘다문화’와 관련된 신문사설의 주제선택과 구성방식을 살펴봄으로써 ‘다문화’와 관련된 미디어체계의 고유한 작동방식상의 특징을 밝히고자 하였다. 연구결과, 한국 신문의 사설에서는 다문화주의에 대한 절대적 순응과 적응이 강조되고 있었고, 다문화주의로의 이동이 필연적이고 역사적인 것이므로 이에 부합하는 가치 및 인식제고가 바람직하다는 사실을 역설하고 있었다. 그리고 분석적이고 사실적인 접근보다는 선언적이고 계몽적 시각이 두드러졌다. 현재의 인구문제 해결을 위해 다문화 사회로의 이동은 어쩔 수 없는 선택이고, 따라서 이에 대한 정책적, 제도적 배려가 우선되어야 한다는 주장이 대부분이었다. 또 이를 위해 비차별, 보편, 인권, 다양한 가치를 바탕으로 다문화사회에 대한 인식개선을 요구하고 있었다.
The present paper aims to provide reflexive exploration about discourses of multi- culturalism in Korean Society. In order to observe how media construct the meaning of this topic, the researcher analyzed newspaper editorials focusing on the themes and narrative construction in each news story. By so doing, the research intended to reveal the unique meaning construction system embedded in media system. The result show that the editorials emphasize absolute conformity and adaptation of the migrant people. Also, the editorials highlight that since the transition to multicultural society is inevitable, accepting changed value system is desirable suitable for newly forming multicultural society. And editorials analyzed for this research turned out to be overwhelmingly enlightening and declaratory. The argumentation that transition to multicultural society might be an inevitable choice in order to solve current population problem and therefore institutional support as well as policy support was dominant in editorials. Equality, universalism, human rights and other various values that are regarded as appropriate for multicultural society were also emphasized.
