소셜 네트워킹 사이트(SNS)를 포함한 새로운 커뮤니케이션 기술들은 과거상상에만 존재하던 행위들을 가능하게 해 줄 뿐만 아니라 새로운 사회변화의가능성 또한 제공한다. 그러나 최근의 학문적 성과에도 불구하고 우리는 아직까지 SNS의 의미에 대한 일반적인 합의에 이르지 못하고 있는 것은 물론 커뮤니케이션 테크놀로지의 한 형태로서 SNS가 어떻게 사회구조의 재생산 혹은 변화와 관련을 가질 수 있는가에 대한 논의를 적극적으로 전개하지 못하고있는 것이 사실이다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해서 본 연구는 먼저 SNS에대한 기존의 연구들과 이론적 경향성들을 비판적으로 검토하였으며, 라슨과바스카르, 아처의 논의를 바탕으로 기술의 사회적, 물질적 실재성에 대한 이해를 시도하였다. 이를 통해서 우리는 SNS가 의도적인 인간의 행위에 의존하지만 인간의 활동에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 잠재력을 지닌 발생적인 구조적구성물의 하나이며, SNS를 통한 기술적 활동은 선험적으로 주어지는 사회적, 문화적 구조와 개인의 행위주체성을 매개하는 것임을 주장하였다. 또한우리는 아처에 의해서 제시된 조직행위자와 원시적 행위자라는 집단적 개념이 SNS상의 네트워크에 어떻게 적용될 수 있는지, 이들이 선택하는 행위전략은 어떤 것들이 있을 수 있는지, 그리고 이들 행위자들이 기존의 사회구조에 어떻게 영향을 미칠 수 있는지를 논의하였다. 마지막으로 우리는 락우드의 사회적 통합과 시스템 통합이라는 개념과 함께 아처에 의해서 논의된 네 가지상황적 논리를 통해서 SNS상에서 나타나는 집단적 상호작용이 어떻게 구조적 변화 혹은 재생산과 연결될 수 있는지에 대한 논의를 전개하였다.
New communication technologies including social networking sites (SNSs) enable people do things they could previously only imagine and let them construe new kinds of social practices. However, despite the current explosive attention to SNS and academic achievement, we have not reached a general agreement on the meaning of SNS. In addition,it is also true that we haven’t actively discussed on how this specific technological artifacts and technical practices enabled by them affect the reproduction or change of social structures. In order to overcome these limitations, this study first critically reviewed previous research on SNS and attempted to understand the nature of social and material reality of SNS based on critical realists such as Lawson, Bhaskar, and Archer. Through the discussion, we defined SNS as a one of the emergent structures that rely on intentional human activities but have the potential to affect them reciprocally, and argue that technical practices mediate between social and cultural structure and individual agency. In addition,we discussed on how primary agents and corporate agents, which were proposed by Archer as distinct social collectives, can be applied to the context of SNS, what kinds of behavioral strategies can be employed by these collectives, and how they affect existing social structures. Finally, we explored the concepts of social integration and system integration articulated by Lockwood and four situational logics discussed by Archer. Based on these, we tried to understand how collective interactions occurring on SNS can be related to structural reproduction and change.
