지금 우리 사회에는 언론이 있는가? 지금 우리 언론은 있더라도 없는 것만 못할 정도로 사회적 흉기로 변모해 있다. 언론은 민주주의의 탄생을 함께 이끌어온 수레바퀴다. 그런 언론이 제 역할을 하지 못할 경우 가장 치명적인 타격을 입는 것은 민주주의 체제다. 특히 자본주의하에서 민주주의는 대단히 불안할 수밖에 없다는 것은 역사적 파시즘의 출현이 입증해주고 있다. 세계경제는극심한 침체에 빠져있고, 한국도 예외가 아니다. 바로 이런 가운데 언론과 민주주의가 동반 추락하고 있다는 것은 예사로 넘길 일이 아니다. 언론현상을 고유 연구영역으로 삼고 있다는 언론학계는 우리 언론이 이 지경에 이를 때까지 과연 얼마나 진정성을 가지고 이 문제를 접근해왔던가? ‘언론학’의 존재의의가 무엇인지 묻지 않을 수 없다. 외양만 화려할 뿐 사회과학의 분과 학문으로서 언론과 사회에 대해 번뜩이는 혜안과 날카로운 지성은 찾아볼 수 없다. 이 논문은 불길하게 보이는 사회 흐름을 읽고, 반면에 이를 방관하는 언론(학)의 성찰을 촉구하기 위해 조지 오웰(George Orwell)을 불러본다. 가히‘아노미 상태’라고 할 만큼 사회적 혼란의 임계에 다다르고 있는 한국 사회는오웰이 경고했던 ‘전체주의’의 그림자를 떠올리게 한다. ‘언론 부재’로 상징되는 오늘의 한국 사회에 던지는 그의 메시지는 매우 섬뜩할 정도로 강력한 호소력으로 다가온다.
Are there today journalism media in Korea? Media in Korea arechanging into a deadly weapon rather than public institutions. Communication media are a wheel by which democracy has beenpulled. If media could not perform their principal role in social system,it is democratic system itself that is heavily damaged. Fascism wewitnessed in history shows that democracy under capitalism is forcedto be very unstable. Now global economy is falling down and Korea isno exception. It is very crucial that both media and democracy are onthe verge of collapse. What on earth has the community of communication studies in Koreadone while journalism media have been standing on the brink of ruin?The community does not have a keen insight and a sharp intellectcompared with its gewgaw. This paper is to urge the community toreflect its neglect by calling out George Orwell.
