This paper aims to investigate cognitive and semantic approaches concerning the 'polysemy', which are largely accepted in cognitive semantics, and attempt to provide a linguistic mechanism capable of representing the semantic structure of 'pied' (meaning of 'foot'), one of the representative polysemous words in French. In general, the mapping relations between lexical forms and concepts are rarely one-to-one. Instead, many word forms map onto more than one concept, which is called the ‘polysemy’. From a viewpoint of cognitive semantics, we will analyze how the meaning extension of 'pied' is realized, based on its central(or prototypical) meaning, i.e., ‟inferior and terminal part of legs in animate beings”. The results of this study shows us that the meaning extension of ‘pied’ has been done chiefly in the domain of [object] and [mental·psychological state·attribute]. Furthermore, finding out diverse polysemous aspects through the analysis of ‘pied’ is expected to explain the semantic structure of ‘body terms’ in French and will contribute to elaborate Knowledge Base.
