우리나라의 인구고령화는 선진국과 비교하여 매우 빠른 속도로 진행되고 있다. 인구고령화의 문제는 사회경제구조에 많은 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되고 이에 대한 대처가 시급한 실정이다. 본 연구는 인구고령화가 산재보험재정에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석하고 산재보험제도가 인구고령화 문제에 대처하기 위한 제도개선을 목적으로 하고 있다. 인구고령화는 산재를 발생시킬 확률을 증가시키고, 고령산재근로자는 요양기간이 길고, 일인당 요양급여가 높아 산재보험재정을 악화시킬 것으로 예상되었다.인구고령화로 인한 산재보험의 재정악화를 억제하기 위해서는 첫째로 노동시장에서 고령근로자의 산업재해의 발생을 최소화하기 위해 고령근로자의 특성에 맞는 산재예방사업이 중점적으로 실시되어야 한다. 둘째 고령산재근로자의 삶의 질 향상을 위해 요양기기의 대여, 노후상담, 장기요양시설의 제공, 방문간호서비스의 제공 등 생활보장적 측면의 급여를 신설하는 것과 함께 근로자간의 평생소득의 형평성을 고려하여 산재보험에 있어서 연령별 최고최저보상한도를 설정하는 것이 바람직하다.
