백파 긍선(白坡亘璇)의 삼종선(三種禪) 사상은 조선 후기 불교계의 최대의 논쟁거리이다. 본고에서는 첫째, 백파의 삼종선이 조선후기 불교계의 최대의 논쟁점으로 부각되어진 이유 둘째, 한국 선종사, 나아가 한국불교사에 있어서 백파의 삼종선 사상이 점유하고 있는 위상 셋째, 백파의 삼종선이 출현하게 된 사상적 배경과 그 논쟁이 함유하고 있는 사상사적 의의 넷째, 한국 간화선에 있어서 백파의 삼종선 사상이 미친 영향 등에 대하여 다루고 있다.
