본 연구는 그림책을 활용한 극화활동의 교육적 효과를 탐색하는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 서울시에 위치한 Y어린이집 유아 10명을 대상으로 방과 후 시간을 이용해 총 10권의 그림책과 관련된 극화활동을 실시하였다. 극화활동이 진행되는 전 과정은 사진과 녹음으로 기록 되었으며, 수집된 자료는 선행연구들이 제시한 극화활동 평가범주를 기초로 네 가지로 범주화하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 유아들은 극화활동을 통해 극화 활동에 대한 집중도를 보이기 시작했고, 둘째, 수줍어하며 극화활동에 소극적으로 참여하던 유아들이 활동이 진행되면서 적극적으로 참여하는 모습이 관찰되었다. 셋째, 극화활동의 경험을 통해 유아들은 보다 다양하고 정교하게 자신의 얼굴표정과 몸을 사용해 극적인 표현을 해 나가게 되었다. 넷째, 유아들은 극화활동을 통해 즉흥적으로 대사를 만들어 표현을 하는 모습이 관찰되었다. 이러한 결과를 통해 그림책을 활용한 극화활동이 유아로 하여금 활동의 집중도와 참여도를 높이며, 언어와 얼굴 및 몸짓을 통해 창의적으로 표현하는 능력이 증진될 수 있음을 알려주었다.

We selected 10 specific picturebooks for children to read. and planned various drama activities that included pantomimes, impromptus, and puppet shows. We conducted this study in a natural setting by choosing one day care center classroom. The subjects were 10 five-year-old children (5 boys and 5 girls) of the center. By observing the participants, taking their photos, interviewing the teacher and children, and collecting “field notes”, the data were analyzed according to four different categories based on the literature review. The findings were as follows: Drama activities using picturebooks help young children 1) enhance their power of concentration, 2) increase their willingness to participate in activities, especially for shy and quiet children, 3) use more diversified facial and body expressions, and 4) develop the ability to use impromptu verbal expressions.
