이 연구는 국내의 동네 놀이터와 해외의 놀이터를 비교문화적으로 살핌으로써 두 문화권 놀이터의 차이와 그 함의를 발견하고 이를 통해 궁극적으로 우리 놀이터의 특징을 이해하고자 한 것이다. 이를 위해 서울 시내 동네 놀이터 두 곳과 호주 브리즈번에 위치한 놀이터 두 곳을 각각 8개월과 약 3개월간 관찰하며 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료들은 에믹 코딩하고 범주화하였으며 이를 통해 각 문화권 놀이터의 대조적 특징에 대한 주제어를 발견하였다. 연구결과 각 문화권의 놀이터는 놀이터 내외부의 경계성, 놀이터 공간의 정태성, 놀이 기구 쓰임의 기획성, 이용 규칙의 명시성, 구성원의 다양성 측면에서 대조적인 특징을 드러내었다. 서울의 아파트숲놀이터와 큰빛놀이터는 뚜렷한 경계, 정태적인 공간, 쓰임이 계획된 놀이기구, 명시적으로 제시된 이용 규칙, 단일한 인종과 수렴되는 연령층을 특징을 하였다. 이에 비해 호주의 농부놀이터와 모험놀이터는 애매한 경계, 변화하는 공간, 쓰임이 정해지지 않는 놀이 기구, 암묵적인 이용 문화, 다양한 인종과 연령대의 이용자를 특징으로 하였다. 이 연구는 몇 가지 한계에도 불구하고 이러한 동네 놀이터의 비교문화적 사례 고찰을 통해 호주 동네놀이터의 특징을 파악할 뿐 아니라 이를 통해 우리나라 동네 놀이터에 대한 이해를 도모함으로써 놀이터에 관련한 실제적 제언을 하고 추후 관련 연구들에 이론적 논의를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
The purpose of this study is to explore the differences between our and abroad neighborhood playgrounds by comparative-culturally looking at them and eventually understand the characteristics of our playgrounds. Data were collected by observing 2 neighborhood playgrounds in Seoul, Korea and Brisbane, Australia, for 8 months and 3 months respectively. Data collected were emic-coded, categorized, and thematized. Themes found were contrasted. The results showed that the characteristics of playgrounds of two countries were different in terms of internal external boundaries of playgrounds, staticality of playground spaces, use schemes of play equipments, clarity of rule of use, diversities of users. Apartment Forest Kindergarten and Keunvit Kindergarten were characterized as distinct boundaries, static spaces, play equipments premeditated for use, specified rules of use, age groups composed of a single race. On the contrary, Farmer and Adventure playground in Australia were characterized as ambiguous boundaries, changing spaces, play equipments unfixed for use, culture of tacit use, diverse races and age groups. In spite of a few limitations, this study, by comparative-culturally examining cases and figuring out the characteristics of neighbor playgrounds of Australia to understand ours, provided practical suggestions and theoretical discussions for further studies.
